Sitri was a Levite, son of Uzziel, from the family of Kohath in the tribe of Levi. He is mentioned in the genealogy of the Levites in Exodus. Although he does not play a prominent role in the biblical narrative, he is part of the important Levitical lineage that served in the tabernacle.
The role of the family of Kohath among the Levites
The descendants of Kohath, including the Zithri family, were given responsibility for the most holy items in the tabernacle during the wilderness journey.
31Their responsibility was the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, the utensils of the sanctuary used in ministering, the curtain, and all the work connected with them.
Zithri's brothers, Mishael and Elzaphan, were appointed by Moses to carry the bodies of Nadab and Abihu out of the camp after they were struck down before the Lord, demonstrating the family's close connection to sanctuary service.
1Aaron's sons Nadab and Abihu each took his censer, put fire in it, laid incense on it, and offered unauthorized fire before the LORD, which he had not commanded them.
4Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, sons of Uzziel, Aaron's uncle, and said to them, "Come here, carry your brothers away from the front of the sanctuary, outside the camp."
8They shall take charge of all the furnishings of the tent of meeting and carry out the duties on behalf of the Israelites, doing the work of the tabernacle.
