Timaeus

Father of the blind Bartimaeus

The time of Jesusc. 1st century AD

Timaeus is known from the New Testament as the father of Bartimaeus, the blind beggar who was healed by Jesus at Jericho. He is mentioned only indirectly through his son's name, 'Bartimaeus' (which means 'son of Timaeus'). Although little is known about Timaeus himself, his son became a witness to Jesus' healing power.

Bartimaeus mentioned as the son of Timaeus

The evangelist Mark identifies the blind beggar at Jericho as 'Bartimaeus, son of Timaeus,' which is the only reference linking Timaeus to biblical history.

46Then they came to Jericho. As he was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a large crowd, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside.

Bartimaeus calls out to Jesus

Bartimaeus, son of Timaeus, heard that Jesus from Nazareth was passing by and cried out: 'Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!' His persistent faith caused Jesus to stop.

46Then they came to Jericho. As he was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a large crowd, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside.
47When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!"
48Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the louder, "Son of David, have mercy on me!"

Jesus heals Bartimaeus

Jesus called Bartimaeus to him and asked what he wanted. Bartimaeus asked to receive his sight again, and Jesus healed him, saying: 'Your faith has saved you.'

49Jesus stopped and said, "Call him." So they called the blind man, saying, "Take heart! Get up; he is calling you."
50Throwing off his cloak, he jumped up and came to Jesus.
51"What do you want me to do for you?" Jesus asked him. The blind man said, "Rabbouni, I want to see again."
52"Go," Jesus said to him, "your faith has healed you." Immediately he received his sight and followed him on the road.

Parallel account in Luke

Luke also tells of the healing of a blind man at Jericho, which many scholars identify with Bartimaeus, son of Timaeus, although the name is not explicitly mentioned.

35As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging.
36When he heard a crowd passing by, he kept asking what this meant.
37They told him, "Jesus of Nazareth is passing by."
38So he called out, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!"
39Those in front rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the louder, "Son of David, have mercy on me!"
40Jesus stopped and ordered that the man be brought to him. When he came near, Jesus asked him,
41"What do you want me to do for you?" "Lord, let me see again," he said.
42Jesus said to him, "Receive your sight. Your faith has saved you."
43Immediately he could see, and he followed him, glorifying God. And all the people who saw it gave praise to God.

Parallel account in Matthew

Matthew recounts the healing of two blind men at Jericho, a narrative traditionally linked to the same event where Bartimaeus, son of Timaeus, was healed.

29As they were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed him.
30And there were two blind men sitting by the road, and when they heard that Jesus was passing by, they cried out, "Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!"
31The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet, but they shouted all the louder, "Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!"
32Jesus stopped, called them over, and asked, "What do you want me to do for you?"
καὶ στὰς ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐφώνησεν αὐτοὺς καὶ εἶπεν· Τί θέλετε ποιήσω ὑμῖν;
33"Lord," they said, "we want our eyes to be opened."
34Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes. Immediately they could see, and they followed him.
