23000

The number 23,000 is linked to God's judgment against idolatry and sin, as well as to the Levites' service in God's presence.

In 1 Corinthians 10:8, Paul mentions that 23,000 fell in one day as a result of sexual immorality and idolatry, referring to the events at Baal-Peor (Numbers 25). The number symbolizes the serious consequences of unfaithfulness toward God and serves as a warning to believers to stay away from idolatry and immorality. In addition, the number 23,000 is mentioned in Numbers 26:62, where it indicates the number of Levites who were counted. This double occurrence gives the number a tension between judgment and service – those who fall into sin, and those set apart for holiness in God’s presence.

Theology

In Numbers 25:9, the number given for those who died in the plague is 24,000, while Paul writes 23,000 in 1 Corinthians 10:8. This difference has been widely discussed. Some explain it by noting that Paul specifies "in one day," whereas the total number, including those executed by the judges (Num 25:5), may have amounted to 24,000. Others point out that Paul may have used rounded figures or followed a different textual tradition.

Theology

The Levites in Numbers 26:62 were counted separately from the other Israelites—all males from one month of age and upward. They received no inheritance share in the land, for the Lord Himself was their inheritance (cf. Num 18:20). Their separation underscores that they were wholly dedicated to service in the sanctuary.
