The number of years Methuselah lived after he fathered Lamech
The number 782 appears in Genesis 5:26, where it is stated that Methuselah lived seven hundred and eighty-two years after he fathered Lamech, and during this period he had other sons and daughters. Methuselah is known as the longest-lived person in the Bible, and his lifespan places him in the direct lineage from Adam to Noah. That he lived 782 years after Lamech's birth means that his life extended all the way to the year of the flood, which in Jewish tradition has given rise to reflections on God's patience and grace—that judgment was delayed as long as the righteous Methuselah was alive. Apart from this occurrence, the number has no well-established independent symbolic meaning in biblical numerology. Methuselah's total lifespan was 969 years (Gen 5:27), the highest age recorded in the Bible.
