In the second year of Joash son of Joahaz, king of Israel, Amaziah son of Joash became king of Judah.
He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jehoaddan, of Jerusalem.
He did what was right in the LORD's eyes, yet not like David his father; he did everything as his father Joash had done.
Only the high places were not removed; the people still sacrificed and burned incense at the high places.
As soon as the kingdom was firmly in his hand, he struck down the servants who had killed the king his father.
But he did not put the children of the murderers to death, as it is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, where the LORD commanded: "Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor children for their fathers; each one shall be put to death for his own sin."
He struck down ten thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt and captured Sela in battle, and he named it Joktheel, as it is called to this day.
Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash son of Jehoahaz, son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, "Come, let us face each other in battle."
But Jehoash king of Israel sent back word to Amaziah king of Judah: "The thistle in Lebanon sent word to the cedar in Lebanon, 'Give your daughter to my son as a wife.' But a wild beast of the field in Lebanon passed by and trampled the thistle underfoot.
You have indeed struck down Edom, and your heart has grown proud. Enjoy your glory, but stay at home. Why provoke disaster and bring yourself down, and Judah with you?"
But Amaziah would not listen. So Jehoash king of Israel marched out, and he and Amaziah king of Judah faced each other at Beth Shemesh in Judah.
Judah was routed before Israel, and every man fled to his tent.
Jehoash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, son of Jehoash, son of Ahaziah, at Beth Shemesh. Then he came to Jerusalem and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate, four hundred cubits.
He took all the gold and silver and all the articles found in the house of the LORD and in the treasuries of the royal palace, along with hostages, and returned to Samaria.
As for the rest of the acts of Jehoash, what he accomplished and his valor, and how he fought against Amaziah king of Judah, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?
Jehoash rested with his fathers and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel, and his son Jeroboam succeeded him as king.
Amaziah son of Joash, king of Judah, lived on fifteen years after the death of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel.
As for the rest of the acts of Amaziah, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah?
A conspiracy was formed against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish. But they sent men after him to Lachish and killed him there.
They brought him back on horses, and he was buried in Jerusalem with his fathers in the City of David.
Then all the people of Judah took Azariah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king in place of his father Amaziah.
He rebuilt Elath and restored it to Judah, after the king had rested with his fathers.
In the fifteenth year of Amaziah son of Joash, king of Judah, Jeroboam son of Joash became king of Israel in Samaria, and he reigned forty-one years.
He did what was evil in the LORD's eyes and did not turn away from any of the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who had led Israel into sin.
He restored the borders of Israel from Lebo Hamath to the Sea of the Arabah, according to the word of the LORD, the God of Israel, which he had spoken through his servant Jonah son of Amittai, the prophet from Gath Hepher.
For the LORD had seen how bitterly Israel suffered—no one was left, neither slave nor free, and there was no one to help Israel.
And the LORD had not said that he would blot out the name of Israel from under heaven, so he saved them by the hand of Jeroboam son of Joash.
As for the rest of the acts of Jeroboam, all that he did and his valor in battle, and how he recovered Damascus and Hamath for Israel,* are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel? [*Footnote: The Hebrew of this clause is difficult; it reads literally "which had belonged to Judah, for Israel."]
Jeroboam rested with his fathers, the kings of Israel, and his son Zechariah succeeded him as king.
