Elisha asked for a double share of Elijah's spirit—and received it. The Bible records at least 14 miracles performed by Elisha, twice as many as those of Elijah. Here is the overview from 2 Kings 2-6.

Parting the Jordan River

Elisha struck the water with Elijah's cloak, and the water parted. He crossed over on dry ground. (2:14)

The water at Jericho was bad and the land unfruitful. Elisha threw salt into the spring and healed the water. (2:19-22)

The Shunammite Woman Bears a Son

The wealthy woman from Shunem was childless. Elisha promised her a son, and she gave birth within a year. (4:8-17)

The Boy Raised to Life

The boy died. Elisha lay on him, and the boy came back to life—he sneezed seven times. (4:18-37)

The Poisonous Stew Healed

The prophets were cooking stew with poisonous gourds. "There is death in the pot!" Elisha threw flour into it, and the food became safe to eat. (4:38-41)

Feeding a Hundred Men

With twenty loaves of barley bread, Elisha fed a hundred men, and there was some left over—as the Lord had said. (4:42-44)

Naaman Healed

The Syrian commander was healed of leprosy by dipping himself seven times in the Jordan. (5:1-14)

The Iron Axe Head Floats

An axe head fell into the river. Elisha threw a stick into the water, and the iron floated to the surface. (6:1-7)

When the time came for the LORD to take Elijah up to heaven in a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal.

Elijah said to Elisha, "Stay here; the LORD has sent me to Bethel." But Elisha said, "As surely as the LORD lives and as you live, I will not leave you." So they went down to Bethel.

The company of the prophets at Bethel came out to Elisha and asked, "Do you know that today the LORD is going to take your master away from you?" "Yes, I know," he said. "Be still."

Then Elijah said to him, "Elisha, stay here; the LORD has sent me to Jericho." But he answered, "As surely as the LORD lives and as you live, I will not leave you." So they went on to Jericho.

The company of the prophets at Jericho came up to Elisha and asked, "Do you know that today the LORD is going to take your master away from you?" "Yes, I know," he said. "Be still."

Then Elijah said to him, "Stay here; the LORD has sent me to the Jordan." But he answered, "As surely as the LORD lives and as you live, I will not leave you." So the two of them went on together.

Fifty men from the company of the prophets followed and stood at a distance, facing them, while the two of them stood at the Jordan.

Elijah took his cloak, rolled it up, and struck the water. The water divided to the right and to the left, and the two of them crossed over on dry ground.

As they were crossing, Elijah said to Elisha, "Ask what I may do for you before I am taken from you." Elisha answered, "Let me receive a double portion of your spirit."

"You have asked a hard thing," Elijah said. "Yet if you see me as I am taken from you, it will be yours. If not, it will not."

As they walked on, talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind.

Elisha saw it and cried out, "My father! My father! The chariots and horsemen of Israel!" And he saw him no more. Then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them in two.

He picked up Elijah's cloak, which had fallen from him, and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan.

Taking the cloak that had fallen from Elijah, he struck the water and said, "Where now is the LORD, the God of Elijah?" When he had struck the water, it divided to the right and to the left, and he crossed over.

The company of the prophets from Jericho saw him from across the river and said, "The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha." They came to meet him and bowed to the ground before him.

"Look," they said, "we your servants have fifty able men. Let them go and search for your master. Perhaps the Spirit of the LORD has carried him off and set him down on some mountain or in some valley." "No," Elisha replied, "do not send them."

But they pressed him until he was too embarrassed to refuse, and he said, "Send them." So they sent fifty men, who searched for three days without finding him.

They returned to Elisha, who was staying in Jericho, and he said to them, "Didn't I tell you not to go?"

The men of the city said to Elisha, "Look, our lord can see that this city is well situated, but the water is bad and the land is barren."

"Bring me a new bowl," he said, "and put salt in it." So they brought it to him.

Then he went out to the spring, threw the salt into it, and said, "This is what the LORD says: I have healed this water. Never again will it cause death or make the land unfruitful."

And the water has been wholesome to this day, just as Elisha had said.

From there Elisha went up to Bethel. As he was walking along the road, some young boys came out of the city and jeered at him, "Go on up, baldhead! Go on up, baldhead!"

He turned around, looked at them, and called down a curse on them in the name of the LORD. Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of them.

From there he went to Mount Carmel, and from there he returned to Samaria.

People

Elijah (אֵלִיָּהוּ, "My God is YHWH") concludes his earthly ministry in this chapter. His being taken up without dying places him in a unique category alongside Enoch (Gen 5:24). In later Jewish tradition, Elijah was expected to return before the Messiah (Mal 4:5), which explains the enduring interest in his fate.

Elisha (אֱלִישָׁע, "My God is salvation") was the son of Shaphat from Abel-meholah and was called to prophetic service in 1 Kings 19:19–21. His request for a "double portion" of Elijah's spirit (פִּי־שְׁנַיִם, verse 9) refers to the birthright described in Deut 21:17, where the firstborn inherited twice as much as other sons. Elisha is thus asking to be recognized as Elijah's primary spiritual heir.

The Sons of the Prophets (בְנֵי־הַנְּבִיאִים) were organized groups of prophets who lived in community at holy sites such as Bethel and Jericho. These prophetic communities appear to have existed since the time of Samuel (1 Sam 10:5; 19:20) and served as training centers for prophetic tradition.

Places

Gilgal (הַגִּלְגָּל) is mentioned as the starting point of the journey. This was likely Gilgal in the hill country near Bethel, not Gilgal by the Jordan. The place was an important cultic center in Israel.

Bethel (בֵּית־אֵל, "House of God") was an ancient holy site connected with the patriarchs (Gen 28:19), but it had also become a center for calf worship under Jeroboam I (1 Kings 12:28–29). The fact that there was a school of prophets there shows that YHWH worship continued alongside idolatry. Archaeological excavations at Beitin (traditionally identified with Bethel) have revealed continuous settlement throughout the Iron Age.

Jericho (יְרִיחוֹ) was strategically located on the western side of the Jordan Valley. The city was known for its water spring (Ain es-Sultan), which, according to verses 19–22, had problems with water quality before Elisha's miracle. This spring still exists today and supplies modern Jericho with water.

The Jordan (הַיַּרְדֵּן) was the boundary river between the western and eastern lands. The parting of the Jordan by Elijah's cloak (verse 8) and later Elisha's repetition of it (verse 14) creates a deliberate parallel to Joshua's crossing (Josh 3) and Moses' parting of the Red Sea.

Mount Carmel (הַר הַכַּרְמֶל), where Elisha goes at the end (verse 25), was the site of Elijah's confrontation with the prophets of Baal (1 Kings 18). Elisha's visit there marks the continuity of his ministry.

Events and Customs

The Cloak as a Symbol of Power: Elijah's cloak (אַדֶּרֶת) was more than just a garment—it symbolized prophetic authority. The fact that Elisha picks up the cloak that fell from Elijah (verse 13) publicly confirms that he has inherited the prophetic office. This cloak was likely made of animal hair or wool and was characteristic of prophets (cf. Zech 13:4).

Tearing Clothes (verse 12): Elisha's action of tearing his own clothes in two pieces was a conventional expression of mourning in ancient Israel (Gen 37:34; Job 1:20). By tearing them "in two" (לִשְׁנַיִם קְרָעִים), he shows complete grief, while at the same time symbolically putting aside his old life before taking up Elijah's cloak.

The Healing of the Water (verses 19–22): The use of salt in a new bowl to purify the water combines practical and symbolic elements. Salt was associated with purity and covenants (Lev 2:13; Num 18:19). The new bowl ensured ritual purity, while the action demonstrated that it was YHWH, not magical techniques, who performed the healing.

Although there is no direct archaeological evidence for the miracle itself, the existence and significance of the spring confirm the geographical reality of the narrative.
