So I urge you—I, a prisoner in the Lord—to live a life worthy of the calling you have received:

with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,

making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your calling;

one Lord, one faith, one baptism;

one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

But to each one of us grace has been given according to the measure of Christ's gift.

That is why it says: "When he ascended on high, he took captivity captive; he gave gifts to people."

Now what does "he ascended" mean, except that he also descended to the lower parts of the earth?

The one who descended is the very one who ascended far above all the heavens, so that he might fill all things.

And he himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers,

to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,

until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God, and become mature, attaining to the measure of the stature of Christ's fullness.

Then we will no longer be infants, tossed by waves and blown about by every wind of teaching, by human trickery and cunning that leads into the schemes of error.

Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow up in every way into him who is the head, Christ.

From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love as each part does its work.

So I say this, and testify to it in the Lord: you must no longer live as the Gentiles live, in the futility of their thinking.

They are darkened in their understanding and alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to the hardening of their hearts.

Having lost all sense of shame, they have given themselves over to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity.

But that is not how you came to know Christ—

assuming you have heard him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus:

to put off your old self, which belongs to your former way of life and is corrupted by deceitful desires;

to be renewed in the spirit of your minds;

and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak the truth to your neighbor, for we are all members of one another.

Be angry, yet do not sin. Do not let the sun go down on your anger,

and do not give the devil a foothold.

Let the thief steal no longer, but rather labor, working honestly with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with the one in need.

Let no rotten talk come out of your mouths, but only what is good for building up as the need arises, that it may give grace to those who hear.

And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

Let all bitterness, rage and anger, shouting and slander be removed from you, along with every form of malice.

Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ forgave you.
