I said to myself, "Come now, I will test you with pleasure; enjoy what is good." But look—this too is a fleeting breath.

Of laughter I said, "It is madness," and of pleasure, "What does it accomplish?"

I explored in my heart how to cheer my body with wine—my mind still guiding me with wisdom—and how to lay hold of folly, until I might see what is good for people to do under heaven during the few days of their lives.

I undertook great works: I built houses for myself and planted vineyards for myself.

I made gardens and parks for myself and planted in them every kind of fruit tree.

I made reservoirs for myself, to water a grove of growing trees.

I bought male and female slaves, and I had servants born in my house. I also owned more herds and flocks than anyone in Jerusalem before me.

I amassed silver and gold for myself, the treasure of kings and provinces. I acquired male and female singers, and the delights of men—a harem.

So I became great, surpassing everyone in Jerusalem before me. And still my wisdom stayed with me.

Whatever my eyes desired I did not withhold from them; I refused my heart no pleasure. My heart found joy in all my labor, and this was my reward for all my labor.

Then I turned to consider all the works my hands had done and the labor I had spent doing them, and look—it was all a fleeting breath, a chasing after wind, and there was nothing to be gained under the sun.

Then I turned to consider wisdom, along with madness and folly. For what can the one do who comes after the king? Only what has already been done.

And I saw that wisdom surpasses folly as light surpasses darkness.

The wise man has eyes in his head, but the fool walks in darkness. Yet I also came to know that one and the same fate overtakes them both.

So I said to myself, "The fate of the fool will overtake me as well. Why then have I been so very wise?" And I said in my heart that this too is a fleeting breath.

For the wise man, like the fool, is not remembered forever; in the days to come both will be long forgotten. How is it that the wise man dies just like the fool?

So I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me. It is all a fleeting breath, a chasing after wind.

I hated all the fruit of my labor under the sun, because I must leave it to the one who comes after me.

And who knows whether he will be wise or a fool? Yet he will have mastery over all the fruit of my labor, into which I poured my toil and my wisdom under the sun. This too is a fleeting breath.

So I turned and gave my heart over to despair concerning all the labor I had toiled at under the sun.

For here is a man whose work is done with wisdom, knowledge, and skill, and he must hand it all over as a portion to someone who never worked for it. This too is a fleeting breath, and a great evil.

For what does a person get from all his labor and from the striving of his heart, as he toils under the sun?

All his days his work brings pain and grief; even at night his mind does not rest. This too is a fleeting breath.

There is nothing better for a person than to eat and drink and find enjoyment in his labor. This too, I saw, comes from the hand of God.

For who can eat, and who can find enjoyment, apart from him?

To the one who pleases him God gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy; but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and heaping up, only to hand it over to the one who pleases God. This too is a fleeting breath, a chasing after wind.

The author describes himself with royal authority and vast resources, referring to surpassing "all who were before me in Jerusalem" (verses 7, 9). The descriptions of building projects, gardens, water reservoirs, slaves, and wealth (verses 4–9) mirror the biblical accounts of Solomon’s reign in 1 Kings 4–10. The reference to being the second king with Jerusalem as his capital fits Solomon’s position. This "royal mask" lends authority to speak about the limitations of pleasure and wealth from firsthand experience.

Places

Jerusalem is mentioned twice (verses 7, 9) as the location of the author’s activities. The descriptions of gardens, parks, and water pools (verses 5–6) have interesting parallels with archaeological findings. South of Jerusalem lie the so-called "Solomon’s Pools" – three large ancient water reservoirs that supplied the area with water. The word pardes (פַּרְדֵּס, "park/paradise") in verse 5 is a loanword from Persian denoting an enclosed royal garden, which may suggest a later dating of the text, or that such garden layouts were known in the region through cultural contact.

Many translations interpret it as "concubines" or "harem", which would fit the description of royal luxury and Solomon’s many wives and concubines according to 1 Kings 11:3. Others interpret it as musical instruments or other luxury items.
