Dead flies make the perfumer's oil stink and ferment; so a little folly outweighs wisdom and honor.

The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but the heart of the fool to the left.

Even on the road, when the fool walks, his sense fails him, and he shows everyone that he is a fool.

If the ruler's temper flares against you, do not leave your post, for composure lays great offenses to rest.

There is an evil I have seen under the sun, the kind of error that comes from a ruler:

folly is set in many high places, while the rich sit in low places.

I have seen slaves on horseback, and princes walking on foot like slaves.

Whoever digs a pit may fall into it, and whoever breaks through a wall may be bitten by a snake.

Whoever quarries stones may be hurt by them, and whoever splits logs is endangered by them.

If the axe is dull and its edge is not sharpened, more strength must be used; but the advantage of wisdom is that it brings success.

If the snake bites before it is charmed, there is no profit for the charmer.

The words of a wise man's mouth win favor, but the lips of a fool consume him.

His words begin in folly and end in wicked madness.

Yet the fool multiplies words. No one knows what is coming, and who can tell anyone what will happen after him?

The toil of fools wears them out, for they do not even know the way to town.

Woe to you, O land, whose king is a boy and whose princes feast in the morning.

Blessed are you, O land, whose king is nobly born and whose princes feast at the proper time—for strength, and not for drunkenness.

Through sloth the roof sags, and through idle hands the house leaks.

Bread is made for laughter, and wine gladdens life, and money answers everything.

Do not curse the king even in your thoughts, and do not curse the rich even in your bedroom, for a bird of the air may carry your voice, and some winged creature may report your words.
