My brothers, as you hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, do not show favoritism.

Suppose a man comes into your assembly wearing gold rings and fine clothes, and a poor man comes in wearing filthy rags.

If you fix your eyes on the one in fine clothes and say, "Here's a good seat for you," but say to the poor man, "You stand over there," or, "Sit on the floor by my feet" —

have you not made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?

Listen, my beloved brothers: has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised to those who love him?

But you have dishonored the poor man. Is it not the rich who oppress you and drag you into court?

Are they not the ones who blaspheme the noble name by which you are called?

If you truly fulfill the royal law found in Scripture, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself," you are doing well.

But if you show favoritism, you are committing sin, and the law convicts you as transgressors.

For whoever keeps the whole law but stumbles at one point has become guilty of all of it.

For he who said, "Do not commit adultery," also said, "Do not murder." So if you do not commit adultery but you do commit murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.

Speak and act, then, as those who are to be judged by the law of freedom.

For judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

What good is it, my brothers, if someone claims to have faith but has no works? Can such faith save him?

Suppose a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacks daily food,

and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, keep warm and eat your fill," but you do not give them what the body needs — what good is that?

So also faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.

But someone will say, "You have faith; I have works." Show me your faith apart from works, and I will show you my faith by my works.

You believe that God is one. You do well! Even the demons believe that — and shudder.

Do you want proof, you empty-headed man, that faith without works is useless?

Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?

You see that faith was at work along with his works, and by his works faith was brought to completion.

And so the Scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness," and he was called God's friend.

You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.

In the same way, was not Rahab the prostitute also justified by works when she welcomed the messengers and sent them off by another road?

For as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.

Abraham (verses 21–23) is presented as "our father" and the supreme example of faith united with works. James specifically refers to Abraham's offering of Isaac (Genesis 22), an event known in Jewish tradition as Akedah ("the binding"). In intertestamental times, this event was regarded as Abraham's greatest test and proof of his loyalty. The title "friend of God" (φίλος θεοῦ) also appears in Isaiah 41:8 and was widespread in Jewish tradition.

Rahab (verse 25) is a surprising figure alongside Abraham—a Canaanite prostitute from Jericho (Joshua 2). She represents the opposite of Abraham in nearly every way: woman versus man, Gentile versus Israelite, prostitute versus patriarch. James uses her to show that faith demonstrated by action applies to everyone, regardless of background. In Jewish tradition, Rahab was counted among the righteous converts, and according to rabbinic tradition, she became an ancestor of several prophets.

The synagogue assembly (verses 2–3): The word συναγωγή can here refer either to a Jewish synagogue or a Christian gathering. The description of seating arrangements reflects a well-known practice: in synagogues and public assemblies in antiquity, seats were hierarchically arranged according to social status and honor. The best places were near the speaker's platform or along the wall, while footstools marked the lowest positions. Wealthy benefactors often expected places of honor as a return for their contributions.

Gold rings (χρυσοδακτύλιος, verse 2): In the Greco-Roman world, wearing multiple gold rings was a clear status symbol. Roman knights had the right to wear a gold ring, and excessive use of rings was a known sign of wealth and vanity criticized by satirists such as Juvenal and Martial.
