What advantage, then, does the Jew have? Or what is the value of circumcision?

Much, in every way. First of all, the Jews were entrusted with the words of God.

What if some were unfaithful? Will their unfaithfulness cancel God's faithfulness?

By no means! Let God be true and every human being a liar, as it is written: "So that you may be shown righteous in your words and prevail when you are judged."

But if our unrighteousness serves to display God's righteousness, what shall we say? Is God unrighteous to inflict his wrath? (I am speaking in human terms.)

By no means! Otherwise, how could God judge the world?

But if my falsehood makes God's truth abound all the more to his glory, why am I still condemned as a sinner?

And why not say—as we are slandered, and as some claim that we say—"Let us do evil so that good may come"? The condemnation of such people is just.

What then? Are we any better off? Not at all. We have already charged that all people, Jews and Greeks alike, are under sin.

As it is written: "There is no one righteous, not even one;

there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God.

All have turned away; together they have become worthless. There is no one who does good, not even one."

"Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness."

"Their feet are quick to shed blood;

ruin and misery mark their paths,

and the way of peace they have not known."

Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are within the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God.

For no human being will be justified in his sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law comes the knowledge of sin.

But now, apart from the law, the righteousness of God has been revealed, attested by the law and the prophets—

the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ, for all who believe. For there is no distinction:

all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.

God presented him as the atoning sacrifice, received through faith in his blood, to demonstrate his righteousness—because in his forbearance he had passed over the sins committed beforehand—

to demonstrate his righteousness in the present time, so that he might be both just and the one who justifies the person who has faith in Jesus.

Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. On what principle? Of works? No, but on the principle of faith.

For we hold that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.

Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of the Gentiles too? Yes, of the Gentiles too,

since God is one—and he will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith.

Do we then abolish the law through faith? By no means! Rather, we uphold the law.
