23Rejoice on that day and leap for joy, for your reward is great in heaven. That is exactly how their ancestors treated the prophets.

24But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort.

25Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will go hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.

26Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you, for that is exactly how their ancestors treated the false prophets.

You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not murder,' and 'Whoever murders will be liable to judgment.'
But I tell you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever says to his brother, 'Raca,' will be liable to the council; and whoever says, 'You fool,' will be liable to the fire of hell.[^1] [^1]: *Raca* is an Aramaic term of contempt, roughly 'empty-head' or 'good-for-nothing.'
So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you,
leave your gift there before the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.
Settle matters quickly with your accuser while you are still on the way with him, or he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the officer, and you will be thrown into prison.
Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.
You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.'
But I tell you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than to have your whole body thrown into hell.
And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than to have your whole body go into hell.
It was also said, 'Whoever divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.'
But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except on the grounds of sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
Again, you have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not swear falsely, but you shall fulfill to the Lord the oaths you have sworn.'
But I tell you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God's throne;
nor by the earth, for it is his footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.
And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make a single hair white or black.
Let your word be 'Yes, yes' or 'No, no'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.
You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.'
But I tell you, do not resist the one who is evil. If anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.
And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have your coat as well.
If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two.
Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.
You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.'
But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
so that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?
And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?
You, therefore, are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
