So these three men stopped answering Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes.

Then Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite, of the family of Ram, burned with anger. His anger burned against Job for justifying himself rather than God,

and it burned against his three friends, because they had found no answer, yet had condemned Job.

Now Elihu had waited before speaking to Job, because the others were older than he was.

But when Elihu saw that the three men had no answer left in their mouths, his anger burned.

So Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite spoke up and said: I am young in years, and you are old; that is why I held back, afraid to tell you what I know.

I thought, Let age speak; let many years teach wisdom.

But it is the spirit in a person, the breath of the Almighty, that gives understanding.

It is not the many who are wise, nor the aged who understand what is right.

So I say: Listen to me; I too will tell you what I know.

I waited while you spoke, I listened to your reasoning as you searched for words.

I gave you my full attention, and look—not one of you refuted Job or answered his arguments.

So do not say, We have found wisdom; let God refute him, not man.

He has not marshaled his words against me, so I will not answer him with speeches like yours.

They are dismayed and have no more to say; words have failed them.

Am I to wait, now that they are silent, now that they stand there with no answer?

I too will have my say; I too will tell what I know.

For I am full of words; the spirit within me compels me.

Inside I am like wine that has no vent, like new wineskins ready to burst.

I must speak and find relief; I must open my lips and answer.

I will show no partiality to anyone, nor will I flatter any man.

For I do not know how to flatter—my Maker would soon carry me off.

The identity of Ram is uncertain; some scholars link the name to Aram or the Arameans, but this remains speculative. Elihu’s fourfold identification (name, father’s name, clan, and family) follows a pattern typical for important figures in the ancient Near East and signals that he is a significant new voice in the debate.
