Jacob's youngest son

Benjamin was the youngest son of Jacob and Rachel, and the only one of Jacob's sons born in the land of Canaan. His birth cost his mother her life, and he was especially loved by his father after Joseph was presumed dead. Benjamin became the ancestor of one of Israel's twelve tribes, which later included King Saul and the apostle Paul.

The Birth of Benjamin and the Death of Rachel
Benjamin was born near Bethlehem while the family was traveling. Rachel died during childbirth and named him Ben-Oni (son of my sorrow), but Jacob gave him the name Benjamin (son of the right hand).
16They moved on from Bethel, and while they were still some distance from Ephrath, Rachel went into labor, and her labor was severe.
וַיִּסְעוּ֙ מִבֵּ֣ית אֵ֔ל וַֽיְהִי־ע֥וֹד כִּבְרַת־הָאָ֖רֶץ לָב֣וֹא אֶפְרָ֑תָה וַתֵּ֥לֶד רָחֵ֖ל וַתְּקַ֥שׁ בְּלִדְתָּֽהּ׃
17As she struggled in her labor, the midwife said to her, "Do not be afraid—you have another son."
וַיְהִ֥י בְהַקְשֹׁתָ֖הּ בְּלִדְתָּ֑הּ וַתֹּ֨אמֶר לָ֤הּ הַמְיַלֶּ֙דֶת֙ אַל־תִּ֣ירְאִ֔י כִּֽי־גַם־זֶ֥ה לָ֖ךְ בֵּֽן׃
18As her life slipped away and she was dying, she named him Ben-Oni, but his father called him Benjamin.
וַיְהִ֞י בְּצֵ֤את נַפְשָׁהּ֙ כִּ֣י מֵ֔תָה וַתִּקְרָ֥א שְׁמ֖וֹ בֶּן־אוֹנִ֑י וְאָבִ֖יו קָֽרָא־ל֥וֹ בִנְיָמִֽין׃
19So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath, that is, Bethlehem.
וַתָּ֖מָת רָחֵ֑ל וַתִּקָּבֵר֙ בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ אֶפְרָ֔תָה הִ֖וא בֵּ֥ית לָֽחֶם׃
20Jacob set up a pillar over her grave, and to this day that pillar marks Rachel's grave.
וַיַּצֵּ֧ב יַעֲקֹ֛ב מַצֵּבָ֖ה עַל־קְבֻרָתָ֑הּ הִ֛וא מַצֶּ֥בֶת קְבֻֽרַת־רָחֵ֖ל עַד־הַיּֽוֹם׃
Jacob's protection of Benjamin
After Joseph was presumed dead, Jacob refused to let Benjamin travel to Egypt with his brothers, fearing he might lose him too.
4But Jacob did not send Benjamin, Joseph's brother, with the others, for he thought, "Harm might come to him."
וְאֶת־בִּנְיָמִין֙ אֲחִ֣י יוֹסֵ֔ף לֹא־שָׁלַ֥ח יַעֲקֹ֖ב אֶת־אֶחָ֑יו כִּ֣י אָמַ֔ר פֶּן־יִקְרָאֶ֖נּוּ אָסֽוֹן׃
36Their father Jacob said to them, "You are robbing me of my children. Joseph is no more, and Simeon is no more, and now you would take Benjamin. Everything is against me!"
וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֲלֵהֶם֙ יַעֲקֹ֣ב אֲבִיהֶ֔ם אֹתִ֖י שִׁכַּלְתֶּ֑ם יוֹסֵ֤ף אֵינֶ֙[t]נּוּ֙ וְשִׁמְע֣וֹן אֵינֶ֔נּוּ וְאֶת־בִּנְיָמִ֣ן תִּקָּ֔חוּ עָלַ֖י הָי֥וּ כֻלָּֽנָה׃
38But Jacob said, "My son will not go down with you. His brother is dead, and he alone is left. If harm comes to him on the journey you are making, you will bring my gray head down to the grave in sorrow." [Footnote: Hebrew Sheol, the place of the dead.]
וַיֹּ֕אמֶר לֹֽא־יֵרֵ֥ד בְּנִ֖י עִמָּכֶ֑ם כִּֽי־אָחִ֨יו מֵ֜ת וְה֧וּא לְבַדּ֣וֹ נִשְׁאָ֗ר וּקְרָאָ֤הוּ אָסוֹן֙ בַּדֶּ֙רֶךְ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר תֵּֽלְכוּ־בָ֔הּ וְהוֹרַדְתֶּ֧ם אֶת־שֵׂיבָתִ֛י בְּיָג֖וֹן שְׁאֽוֹלָה׃
Benjamin travels to Egypt
Due to the famine, Jacob was finally forced to send Benjamin to Egypt with his brothers to buy grain.
13Take your brother as well, and go back to the man.
וְאֶת־אֲחִיכֶ֖ם קָ֑חוּ וְק֖וּמוּ שׁ֥וּבוּ אֶל־הָאִֽישׁ׃
14May God Almighty grant you mercy before the man, so that he releases your other brother and Benjamin. As for me, if I am bereaved, I am bereaved."
וְאֵ֣ל שַׁדַּ֗י יִתֵּ֨ן לָכֶ֤ם רַחֲמִים֙ לִפְנֵ֣י הָאִ֔ישׁ וְשִׁלַּ֥ח לָכֶ֛ם אֶת־אֲחִיכֶ֥ם אַחֵ֖ר וְאֶת־בִּנְיָמִ֑ין וַאֲנִ֕י כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר שָׁכֹ֖לְתִּי שָׁכָֽלְתִּי׃
15So the men took the gift, and they took double the silver with them, and Benjamin, and they set out and went down to Egypt and stood before Joseph.
וַיִּקְח֤וּ הָֽאֲנָשִׁים֙ אֶת־הַמִּנְחָ֣ה הַזֹּ֔את וּמִשְׁנֶה־כֶּ֛סֶף לָקְח֥וּ בְיָדָ֖ם וְאֶת־בִּנְיָמִ֑ן וַיָּקֻ֙מוּ֙ וַיֵּרְד֣וּ מִצְרַ֔יִם וַיַּֽעַמְד֖וּ לִפְנֵ֥י יוֹסֵֽף׃
16When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, "Bring these men into the house. Slaughter an animal and make it ready, for they are to eat with me at noon."
וַיַּ֨רְא יוֹסֵ֣ף אִתָּם֮ אֶת־בִּנְיָמִין֒ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ לַֽאֲשֶׁ֣ר עַל־בֵּית֔וֹ הָבֵ֥א אֶת־הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים הַבָּ֑יְתָה וּטְבֹ֤חַ טֶ֙בַח֙ וְהָכֵ֔ן כִּ֥י אִתִּ֛י יֹאכְל֥וּ הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים בַּֽצָּהֳרָֽיִם׃
Joseph's silver cup in Benjamin's sack
Joseph tested his brothers by planting his silver cup in Benjamin's sack, which led Judah to offer himself as a slave in Benjamin's place.
1Then Joseph gave this order to his steward: "Fill the men's sacks with as much food as they can carry, and put each man's silver in the mouth of his sack.
וַיְצַ֞ו אֶת־אֲשֶׁ֣ר עַל־בֵּיתוֹ֮ לֵאמֹר֒ מַלֵּ֞א אֶת־אַמְתְּחֹ֤ת הָֽאֲנָשִׁים֙ אֹ֔כֶל כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר יוּכְל֖וּן שְׂאֵ֑ת וְשִׂ֥ים כֶּֽסֶף־אִ֖ישׁ בְּפִ֥י אַמְתַּחְתּֽוֹ׃
2And put my cup, the silver one, in the mouth of the youngest one's sack, along with the silver for his grain." And he did as Joseph told him.
וְאֶת־גְּבִיעִ֞י גְּבִ֣יעַ הַכֶּ֗סֶף תָּשִׂים֙ בְּפִי֙ אַמְתַּ֣חַת הַקָּטֹ֔ן וְאֵ֖ת כֶּ֣סֶף שִׁבְר֑וֹ וַיַּ֕עַשׂ כִּדְבַ֥ר יוֹסֵ֖ף אֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבֵּֽר׃
12He searched, beginning with the oldest and ending with the youngest, and the cup was found in Benjamin's sack.
וַיְחַפֵּ֕שׂ בַּגָּד֣וֹל הֵחֵ֔ל וּבַקָּטֹ֖ן כִּלָּ֑ה וַיִּמָּצֵא֙ הַגָּבִ֔יעַ בְּאַמְתַּ֖חַת בִּנְיָמִֽן׃
13At this they tore their clothes. Then each loaded his donkey and they returned to the city.
וֽ͏ַיִּקְרְע֖וּ שִׂמְלֹתָ֑ם וַֽיַּעֲמֹס֙ אִ֣ישׁ עַל־חֲמֹר֔וֹ וַיָּשֻׁ֖בוּ הָעִֽירָה׃
33So now, please let your servant remain as my lord's slave in place of the boy, and let the boy go back with his brothers.
וְעַתָּ֗ה יֵֽשֶׁב־נָ֤א עַבְדְּךָ֙ תַּ֣חַת הַנַּ֔עַר עֶ֖בֶד לַֽאדֹנִ֑י וְהַנַּ֖עַר יַ֥עַל עִם־אֶחָֽיו׃
34For how can I go up to my father if the boy is not with me? I could not bear to see the misery that would come upon my father."
כִּי־אֵיךְ֙ אֶֽעֱלֶ֣ה אֶל־אָבִ֔י וְהַנַּ֖עַר אֵינֶ֣נּוּ אִתִּ֑י פֶּ֚ן אֶרְאֶ֣ה בָרָ֔ע אֲשֶׁ֥ר יִמְצָ֖א אֶת־אָבִֽי׃
Reunion with Joseph
When Joseph revealed his identity, he embraced Benjamin and wept, and Benjamin wept on his neck.
14Then he threw his arms around his brother Benjamin's neck and wept, and Benjamin wept on his neck.
וַיִּפֹּ֛ל עַל־צַוְּארֵ֥י בִנְיָמִֽן־אָחִ֖יו וַיֵּ֑בְךְּ וּבִנְיָמִ֔ן בָּכָ֖ה עַל־צַוָּארָֽיו׃
22To each of them he gave a change of clothes, but to Benjamin he gave three hundred pieces of silver and five changes of clothes.
לְכֻלָּ֥ם נָתַ֛ן לָאִ֖ישׁ חֲלִפ֣וֹת שְׂמָלֹ֑ת וּלְבִנְיָמִ֤ן נָתַן֙ שְׁלֹ֣שׁ מֵא֣וֹת כֶּ֔סֶף וְחָמֵ֖שׁ חֲלִפֹ֥ת שְׂמָלֹֽת׃
Jacob's blessing
On his deathbed, Jacob blessed Benjamin and described him as a ravenous wolf that devours prey in the morning and divides plunder in the evening.
27Benjamin is a ravenous wolf; in the morning he devours the prey, in the evening he divides the spoil."
בִּנְיָמִין֙ זְאֵ֣ב יִטְרָ֔ף בַּבֹּ֖קֶר יֹ֣אכַל עַ֑ד וְלָעֶ֖רֶב יְחַלֵּ֥ק שָׁלָֽל׃
