Chosen as a Spy

Sakkur was chosen by Moses to represent the tribe of Issachar in spying out the land of Canaan.

The Spying Mission in Canaan

Sakkur was part of the group of twelve men who explored the land of Canaan for forty days, from the Desert of Sin to Rehob.

21So they went up and scouted out the land, from the Wilderness of Zin as far as Rehob, near Lebo-hamath.
22They went up through the Negev and came to Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the descendants of Anak, lived. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)
23When they reached the Valley of Eshcol, they cut off a branch bearing a single cluster of grapes, and two of them carried it on a pole between them, along with some pomegranates and figs.
24That place was called the Valley of Eshcol because of the cluster the Israelites cut down there.
25At the end of forty days they returned from scouting out the land.

The Negative Report

Sakkur was among the ten spies who brought back a discouraging report and claimed that the people in the land were too strong to be defeated.

28But the people who live there are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. We even saw the descendants of Anak there.
29The Amalekites live in the land of the Negev; the Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites live in the hill country; and the Canaanites live by the sea and along the Jordan."
31But the men who had gone up with him said, "We cannot attack those people; they are stronger than we are."
32And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had scouted: "The land we traveled through to explore it devours those who live in it, and all the people we saw there are of enormous size.
33We even saw the Nephilim there—the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim. In our own eyes we seemed like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.

The People's Rebellion

The negative report from Sakkur and the other spies led the entire congregation of Israel to rebel against Moses and Aaron, wanting to return to Egypt.

1Then the whole congregation broke out in a loud cry, and the people wept through that night.
2All the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron, and the whole congregation said to them, "If only we had died in Egypt! Or if only we had died in this wilderness!
3Why is the LORD bringing us to this land, only to fall by the sword? Our wives and children will become plunder. Wouldn't it be better for us to go back to Egypt?"
4And they said to one another, "Let's choose a leader and go back to Egypt."

God's Judgment on the Unfaithful Spies

As punishment for their treacherous report and for causing the people to grumble against the Lord, Sakkur and the other nine negative spies died from a plague before the Lord.

36So the men Moses had sent to explore the land, who returned and made the whole congregation grumble against him by spreading a bad report about it—
37these men who spread the evil report about the land died of a plague before the LORD.
38Of the men who went to explore the land, only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh remained alive.
