Abiasaf

Levitical clan leader from the line of Korah

Tunnetaan myös nimellä: Ebiasaph

Lähtö EgyptistäLeviteClan leaderAncestorc. 1400 BC

Abiasaph was a Levite belonging to the family of Korah, listed as one of Korah's sons in Exod 6:24. Although his father Korah led a rebellion against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness and was struck by God's judgment, Korah's sons were spared (Num 26:11) – a striking example that God's punishment does not automatically pass down through generations. Abiasaph became an important ancestor within the Levitical service. His descendants received prominent roles in Israel's worship life: the Korahites served as gatekeepers at the sanctuary (1 Chr 9:19) and as singers in the temple. Through his lineage descended the singer Heman, whom King David appointed as leader of praise (1 Chr 6:33–38). The name form Ebiasaph in 1 Chr 6:22–23 is considered by most scholars to be a variant of Abiasaph, and the two are usually identified as the same person.

Mentioned in the genealogy of Korah

Abiasaf is listed as one of the sons of Korah in the Levitical genealogy, confirming his place in the tribe of Levi.

24The sons of Korah: Assir, Elkanah, and Abiasaph. These were the clans of the Korahites.

Korah's Sons Spared During the Rebellion

Abiasaf's father, Korah, led a rebellion against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness and was struck by God's judgment. According to Numbers 16, the rebels perished—Dathan and Abiram were swallowed by the earth, while Korah and the 250 men with their incense burners were consumed by fire from the Lord. However, Korah's sons, including Abiasaf, were spared from punishment.

1Now Korah son of Izhar, son of Kohath, son of Levi, took action, along with Dathan and Abiram sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth, descendants of Reuben.
2They rose up against Moses, together with two hundred and fifty men of Israel, leaders of the community, appointed members of the assembly, men of reputation.

3They gathered against Moses and Aaron and said to them, "You have gone too far! The whole community is holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them. Why then do you set yourselves above the LORD's assembly?"
31As soon as he finished speaking these words, the ground under them split open.

32The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and their households, along with all Korah's men and all their possessions.

33They went down alive to the realm of the dead, with everything they owned. The earth closed over them, and they perished from among the assembly.
35And fire came out from the LORD and consumed the two hundred and fifty men who were offering the incense.

11The sons of Korah, however, did not die.

Genealogy in First Chronicles

Abiasaf (here called Ebiasaph) is mentioned in the detailed Levitical genealogy in 1 Chronicles, showing his connection to the Levitical service and his place in the family tree.

The Role of the Korahites as Gatekeepers

The descendants of Korah, including Abiasaf's line, were given the task of serving as gatekeepers at the Lord's dwelling, a duty that tradition traces back to the wilderness period.

19Shallum son of Kore, son of Ebiasaph, son of Korah, and his kinsmen of his ancestral house, the Korahites, were in charge of the work of the service, guarding the thresholds of the tent, just as their fathers had guarded the entrance to the camp of the LORD.

Connection to the Singer Heman

Through Abiasaf's lineage descended the singer Heman, who was appointed by David to lead worship in the temple.

33Their kinsmen the Levites were assigned to all the other service of the tabernacle, the house of God.
