The Promised Prophet Like Moses

'The Prophet' is a messianic title referring to Jesus of Nazareth, based on Moses' promise in Deuteronomy 18:15-18 that God would raise up a prophet like him. In the New Testament, Jesus is repeatedly identified as this promised prophet, and the people recognized him as a mighty prophet in word and deed. Jesus fulfilled the role of the ultimate prophet by revealing God's will and speaking God's words with perfect authority.

Moses' Prophecy about the Coming Prophet

Moses promised the people of Israel that the Lord their God would raise up a prophet like him from among their own brothers, and that they should listen to him.

The People Recognize Jesus as the Prophet

After Jesus fed five thousand men with five loaves and two fish, the people said: 'This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world.'

Discussion about Whether Jesus Is the Prophet

During the Feast of Tabernacles, a debate arose among the people in Jerusalem over whether Jesus was the promised Prophet or the Messiah.

Peter's Speech about the Prophet

In his speech at Solomon's Colonnade, Peter proclaimed that Jesus is the Prophet Moses had foretold and urged the people to listen to him in all things.

Stephen's Testimony about the Prophet

In his defense before the Council, Stephen quoted Moses' promise concerning the Prophet and accused the ancestors of the people of rejecting the prophets God had sent, including the Righteous One.

The Emmaus Travelers Call Jesus a Prophet

On the road to Emmaus, the two disciples described Jesus from Nazareth as a prophet, mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, before the risen Jesus revealed himself to them.
