Show the "I Am" Statements7 statements in the Gospel of John

In the Gospel of John, Jesus uses the expression "I am" (Greek: ego eimi) seven times with different images. This recalls God's name "I AM" from Exodus 3:14.

13When Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there by boat to a deserted place, to be alone. But the crowds heard of it and followed him on foot from the towns.

14When he came ashore, he saw a large crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick.

15As evening drew on, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a deserted place, and the hour is already late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves."

16But Jesus said to them, "They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat."

17"We have nothing here," they said, "except five loaves and two fish."

18"Bring them here to me," he said.

19He ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Then he took the five loaves and the two fish, looked up to heaven, gave thanks, and broke the loaves. He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.

20They all ate and were satisfied, and they gathered up twelve baskets full of the leftover pieces.

21Those who ate numbered about five thousand men, besides women and children.

30The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught.

31He said to them, "Come away by yourselves to a solitary place and rest a while." For many were coming and going, and they had no chance even to eat.

32So they went off in the boat to a solitary place by themselves.

33But many saw them leaving and recognized them, and they ran there on foot from all the towns and arrived ahead of them.

34When Jesus came ashore, he saw the large crowd and had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began to teach them many things.

35When it was already late, his disciples came to him and said, "This place is deserted, and it is already late.

36Send them away so they can go to the surrounding farms and villages and buy themselves something to eat."

37But he answered, "You give them something to eat." They said to him, "Are we to go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give it to them to eat?"

38He said to them, "How many loaves do you have? Go and see." When they had found out, they said, "Five, and two fish."

39Then he directed them to have everyone recline in groups on the green grass.

40So they sat down in groups of hundreds and of fifties.

41Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and blessed them, then broke the loaves. He kept giving them to his disciples to set before the people, and he divided the two fish among them all.

42They all ate and were satisfied,

43and they picked up twelve baskets full of broken pieces of bread and fish.

44Those who had eaten the loaves were five thousand men.

10When the apostles returned, they told him everything they had done. Then he took them with him and withdrew privately to a town called Bethsaida.

11But the crowds found out and followed him. He welcomed them, spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who needed healing.

12Late in the day the Twelve came to him and said, "Send the crowd away, so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside to find lodging and food, because we are here in a deserted place."

13But he said to them, "You give them something to eat." They answered, "We have no more than five loaves and two fish — unless we go and buy food for all these people."

14There were about five thousand men. He said to his disciples, "Have them sit down in groups of about fifty."

15They did so, and had them all sit down.

16Then he took the five loaves and the two fish, looked up to heaven, blessed them, broke them, and kept giving them to the disciples to set before the crowd.

17They all ate and were satisfied, and the pieces left over were picked up — twelve baskets full.

1After this, Jesus crossed to the far side of the Sea of Galilee, also called the Sea of Tiberias.

2A large crowd followed him, because they had seen the signs he performed on those who were sick.

4The Passover, the festival of the Jews, was near.

5When Jesus looked up and saw the great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, "Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat?"

6He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he was about to do.

7Philip answered him, "Two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get even a little."

8One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to him,

9"There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what is that among so many?"

10Jesus said, "Have the people sit down." There was plenty of grass in that place, so the men sat down, about five thousand of them.

11Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were seated; he did the same with the fish, as much as they wanted.

12When they had eaten their fill, he said to his disciples, "Gather up the leftover pieces, so that nothing is wasted."

13So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with the pieces left over from the five barley loaves after the people had eaten.

14When the people saw the sign he had performed, they said, "This truly is the Prophet who is to come into the world."

15Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and take him by force to make him king, withdrew again to the mountain by himself.

13When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?"

14They said, "Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets."

15"But you," he said to them, "who do you say I am?"

16Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

17Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.

18And I tell you: you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.

19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."

20Then he ordered his disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.

27Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, "Who do people say I am?"

28They answered, "John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets."

30And he ordered them not to tell anyone about him.

24while the boat was already a long way from land, battered by the waves, for the wind was against them.

25In the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea.

26When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified. "It's a ghost!" they said, and they cried out in fear.

27But at once Jesus spoke to them: "Take heart, it is I. Do not be afraid."

28Peter answered him, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water."

29"Come," he said. So Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water, and came to Jesus.

30But when he saw how strong the wind was, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, "Lord, save me!"

31At once Jesus reached out his hand and caught hold of him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?"

32And when they had climbed into the boat, the wind died down.

33Then those in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."

50for they all saw him and were terrified. But he spoke to them at once: "Take courage! It is I. Do not be afraid."

51Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. And they were completely astounded within themselves,

52for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.

So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum looking for Jesus.
When they found him on the other side of the sea, they asked him, "Rabbi, when did you get here?"
Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I tell you: you are looking for me not because you saw signs, but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.
Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has set his seal."
So they said to him, "What must we do to carry out the works of God?"
Jesus answered them, "This is the work of God: that you believe in the one he has sent."
So they said to him, "What sign will you perform, then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work will you do?
Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, as it is written: 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'"
Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I tell you: it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.
For the bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."
So they said to him, "Lord, give us this bread always."
Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.
But as I told you, you have seen me, and still you do not believe.
All that the Father gives me will come to me, and the one who comes to me I will never drive away.
For I have come down from heaven not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me.
And this is the will of him who sent me: that I should lose nothing of all he has given me, but raise it up on the last day.
For this is my Father's will: that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day."
Then the Jews began to grumble about him because he said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven."
They said, "Isn't this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, 'I have come down from heaven'?"
Jesus answered them, "Stop grumbling among yourselves.
No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up on the last day.
It is written in the Prophets: 'And they will all be taught by God.' Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me.
Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father.
Truly, truly, I tell you: whoever believes has eternal life.
I am the bread of life.
Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.
This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that anyone may eat of it and not die.
I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh."
Then the Jews argued sharply among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?"
So Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I tell you: unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.
For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him.
Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me.
This is the bread that came down from heaven. It is not like the bread your fathers ate—and they died. Whoever eats this bread will live forever."
He said these things while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
On hearing it, many of his disciples said, "This teaching is hard. Who can accept it?"
Knowing within himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, "Does this offend you?
Then what if you see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before?
The Spirit gives life; the flesh is of no help at all. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life.
But there are some of you who do not believe." For Jesus had known from the beginning who did not believe and who would betray him.
And he said, "This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father."
Because of this, many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him.
So Jesus said to the Twelve, "Do you want to leave too?"
