Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria. So Jehu wrote letters and sent them to Samaria, to the officials of Jezreel, to the elders, and to the guardians of Ahab's sons. He wrote:
"Your master's sons are with you, and you have chariots and horses, a fortified city and weapons. So now, as soon as this letter reaches you,
choose the best and most capable of your master's sons, set him on his father's throne, and fight for your master's house."
But they were terrified and said, "If two kings could not stand against him, how can we?"
So the palace administrator, the governor of the city, the elders, and the guardians sent word to Jehu: "We are your servants, and we will do whatever you tell us. We will not make anyone king. Do whatever you think best."
Then Jehu wrote them a second letter: "If you are on my side and will obey me, take the heads of your master's sons and come to me at Jezreel by this time tomorrow." Now the king's sons, seventy of them, were with the leading men of the city, who were raising them.
When the letter reached them, they took the king's sons and slaughtered all seventy. They put their heads in baskets and sent them to Jehu at Jezreel.
When the messenger came and told him, "They have brought the heads of the king's sons," Jehu said, "Pile them in two heaps at the entrance of the gate until morning."
In the morning he went out, stood before all the people, and said, "You are innocent. It was I who conspired against my master and killed him—but who struck down all these?
Know then that not one word the LORD spoke against the house of Ahab will fall to the ground. The LORD has done what he promised through his servant Elijah."
Then Jehu struck down everyone left of the house of Ahab in Jezreel, along with all his leading men, his close friends, and his priests, leaving him no survivor.
Then he set out for Samaria. On the way, at Beth Eked of the Shepherds,
Jehu came upon the relatives of Ahaziah king of Judah and asked, "Who are you?" They answered, "We are relatives of Ahaziah, and we have come down to greet the sons of the king and the sons of the queen mother."
"Take them alive," he ordered. So they took them alive and slaughtered them at the cistern of Beth Eked—forty-two men. He left none of them alive.
When he left there, he met Jehonadab son of Rechab, who was coming to meet him. Jehu greeted him and said, "Is your heart as true to me as mine is to you?" "It is indeed," Jehonadab answered. "Then give me your hand," said Jehu. So he gave him his hand, and Jehu helped him up into the chariot
and said, "Come with me and see my zeal for the LORD." So he rode along with him in his chariot.
When Jehu came to Samaria, he struck down all who were left of Ahab's family there, wiping them out, just as the LORD had said to Elijah.
Then Jehu gathered all the people together and said to them, "Ahab served Baal a little; Jehu will serve him much.
Now summon to me all the prophets of Baal, all his servants and all his priests. Let no one be missing, for I am holding a great sacrifice for Baal. Whoever is missing will not live." But Jehu was acting deceitfully, in order to destroy the servants of Baal.
Jehu said, "Proclaim a solemn assembly for Baal." And they announced it.
Then Jehu sent word throughout Israel, and all the servants of Baal came; not one stayed away. They crowded into the temple of Baal until it was filled from wall to wall.
Jehu said to the keeper of the wardrobe, "Bring out robes for all the servants of Baal." So he brought out robes for them.
Then Jehu and Jehonadab son of Rechab entered the temple of Baal, and Jehu said to the servants of Baal, "Search and make sure that no servant of the LORD is here among you—only servants of Baal."
So they went in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings. Now Jehu had stationed eighty men outside, and he had told them, "If any man lets one of these escape whom I am placing in your hands, his own life will be forfeit."
As soon as he had finished offering the burnt offering, Jehu ordered the guards and the officers, "Go in and strike them down; let no one escape." So they cut them down with the sword. Then the guards and officers threw the bodies out and went on into the inner shrine of the temple of Baal.[^1] [^1]: The Hebrew word here normally means "city"; the sense of the phrase is uncertain, and it may refer to an inner room or citadel of the temple.
They brought out the sacred pillars of the temple of Baal and burned them.
They tore down the sacred pillar of Baal, demolished the temple of Baal, and made it into a latrine—and so it remains to this day.
So Jehu wiped out Baal worship from Israel.
But he did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, into which he had led Israel—the golden calves at Bethel and at Dan.
The LORD said to Jehu, "Because you have done well in carrying out what is right in my eyes and have done to the house of Ahab all that I had in mind, your descendants to the fourth generation will sit on the throne of Israel."
Yet Jehu was not careful to walk in the law of the LORD, the God of Israel, with all his heart. He did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam, who had led Israel into sin.
In those days the LORD began to reduce the territory of Israel. Hazael struck them down throughout the territory of Israel,
east of the Jordan: all the land of Gilead—the region of Gad, Reuben, and Manasseh—from Aroer by the Arnon Valley through Gilead to Bashan.
As for the rest of the acts of Jehu, all that he did and all his mighty deeds, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel?
Jehu rested with his fathers and was buried in Samaria. And Jehoahaz his son succeeded him as king.
Jehu reigned over Israel in Samaria twenty-eight years.
