Asa did what was good and right in the eyes of the LORD his God.

He removed the foreign altars and the high places, smashed the sacred pillars, and cut down the Asherah poles.

He commanded Judah to seek the LORD, the God of their fathers, and to keep the law and the commandment.

He removed the high places and the incense altars from all the cities of Judah, and the kingdom was at peace under him.

He built fortified cities in Judah, for the land was at peace. No one made war against him in those years, because the LORD had given him rest.

He said to Judah, "Let us build up these cities and surround them with walls and towers, with gates and bars. The land is still ours, because we have sought the LORD our God. We sought him, and he has given us rest on every side." So they built, and they prospered.

Asa had an army of three hundred thousand men from Judah, armed with large shields and spears, and two hundred and eighty thousand from Benjamin, carrying small shields and drawing bows. All of them were mighty warriors.

Then Zerah the Cushite marched out against them with an army of a million men and three hundred chariots, and he advanced as far as Mareshah.

Asa went out to meet him, and they drew up their battle lines in the Valley of Zephathah near Mareshah.

Asa called out to the LORD his God: "LORD, there is no one besides you to help the powerless against the mighty. Help us, LORD our God, for we rely on you, and in your name we have come against this vast horde. LORD, you are our God; do not let mere mortals prevail against you."

So the LORD struck down the Cushites before Asa and before Judah, and the Cushites fled.

Asa and the troops with him pursued them as far as Gerar. The Cushites fell until not one of them was left alive, for they were shattered before the LORD and before his army. And they carried off a very great amount of plunder.

They struck down all the cities around Gerar, for the terror of the LORD had fallen on them. They plundered all those cities, for there was much plunder in them.

They attacked the camps of the herdsmen as well and carried off great numbers of sheep and camels. Then they returned to Jerusalem.

The term "Cushite" may refer to someone from Cush (Nubia/Ethiopia) or possibly an Arabian tribal chieftain, since "Cush" in some biblical texts can denote areas in northwestern Arabia. Some scholars have suggested a connection with Egyptian military campaigns during the 22nd (Libyan) dynasty, but this remains uncertain. The army size of "a thousand thousands" (אֶלֶף אֲלָפִים) may be a literary device to emphasize the enemy’s overwhelming strength, or the number could represent military units.

Places

Mareshah (Hebrew: מָרֵשָׁה) was an important fortified city in Judah, located in the Shephelah region (the lowland between the coastal plain and the mountains). The city lay strategically on the main road from the coastal plain up to Hebron. Archaeological excavations at Tell Sandahanna (Tell Maresha) have uncovered fortifications, although the most extensive finds date to the Persian and Hellenistic periods.

The Valley of Zephathah (גֵּיא צְפַתָה) near Mareshah was the battlefield where Asa met the Cushite army. The valley’s location made it a natural gateway for invading forces from the south and west.

Gerar was an ancient city in the Negev region, near the border with Egypt. The pursuit of the enemy all the way to Gerar (vv. 12–13) indicates that the invading force came from the south or southwest.

War Booty (vv. 12–14): After the victory, the Israelites took considerable plunder, including livestock and camels from the nomads’ tent encampments. This indicates that the invading force included nomadic elements, which may support the theory of Arabian involvement.
