Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him, we ask you, brothers and sisters,

do not be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed—whether by a spirit, or a word, or a letter supposedly from us—claiming that the day of the Lord has already come.

Let no one deceive you in any way. That day will not come until the rebellion takes place and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction,

who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, even seating himself in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God.

Don't you remember that I told you these things while I was still with you?

And you know what is now restraining him, so that he may be revealed at his proper time.

For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only the one who restrains it is holding it back for now, until he is taken out of the way.

Then the lawless one will be revealed, and the Lord Jesus will destroy him with the breath of his mouth and bring him to nothing by the splendor of his coming.

The coming of the lawless one is by the working of Satan, with all power and false signs and wonders,

and with every kind of wicked deception aimed at those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.

For this reason God sends them a deluding power, so that they believe the lie,

and so all who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness will be condemned.

But we must always thank God for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits for salvation, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and faith in the truth.

To this he called you through our gospel, that you might obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions you were taught, whether by our spoken word or by our letter.

Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and by grace gave us eternal comfort and good hope,

comfort your hearts and strengthen you in every good work and word.

Παρουσία (parousia, v. 1, 8–9) literally means "presence" or "arrival", but was a technical term in antiquity for an emperor’s or high-ranking official’s official visit to a city. On such occasions, the citizens would go out to meet the arriving dignitary – which illuminates the image of believers being "gathered" (ἐπισυναγωγή, episynagōgē) to Christ. Ἐπιφάνεια (epifaneia, v. 8) was also used for divine manifestations and royal visits in Hellenistic culture.

The expression ὁ ἄνθρωπος τῆς ἀνομίας ("the man of lawlessness", v. 3; some manuscripts have τῆς ἁμαρτίας, "the man of sin") and ὁ υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας ("the son of destruction") use Semitic idioms where "son of" or "man of" expresses a person’s fundamental character. Τὸ κατέχον/ὁ κατέχων ("the one who restrains / that which restrains", v. 6–7) remains one of the most debated expressions in the New Testament – interpretations have included the Roman Empire, the emperor, the Holy Spirit, or angelic powers. The word ἐνέστηκεν can mean either "is near at hand" or "has already arrived". This error spread through three channels mentioned by Paul: spiritual revelation (πνεῦμα), oral preaching (λόγος), or letters falsely attributed to Paul. This shows that false teaching and forged letters were real problems in the early church.

The description of the lawless one who sets himself up in "the temple of God" (ναὸν τοῦ θεοῦ, v. 4) and presents himself as god (ἀποδεικνύντα ἑαυτὸν ὅτι ἔστιν θεός), alludes to Jewish and Old Testament expectations of an end-time enemy of God (cf. Dan 11:36–37; Ezek 28:2). For first-generation Christians, this could evoke associations with Emperor Caligula’s attempt in AD 40 to erect his statue in the Jerusalem temple – a crisis that was only averted by his death and which remained vivid in memory when the letter was written.
