Finally, brothers, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may run swiftly and be glorified, just as it is among you,

and that we may be rescued from perverse and evil people — for not everyone has faith.

But the Lord is faithful; he will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one.

And we are confident in the Lord about you, that you are doing and will go on doing what we command.

May the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the steadfastness of Christ.

Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to keep away from every brother who lives an undisciplined life and not according to the tradition they received from us.

For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us: we were not idle when we were with you,

nor did we eat anyone's bread without paying for it. Instead, we worked night and day, laboring and struggling, so that we would not be a burden to any of you.

Not that we lack the right to such support, but we wanted to give you an example to imitate.

For even when we were with you, we gave you this command: if anyone is unwilling to work, he should not eat.

We hear that some among you are living undisciplined lives, doing no work at all but meddling in the work of others.

Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to work quietly and eat their own bread.

As for you, brothers, do not grow weary of doing good.

If anyone does not obey what we say in this letter, take note of him. Have nothing to do with him, so that he may be ashamed.

Yet do not regard him as an enemy, but warn him as a brother.

Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with you all.

I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. This is the mark of every letter of mine; this is how I write.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.

Work and Idleness in Antiquity

Paul’s strong exhortation to work ("if anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat", v. 10) must be understood against the background of both Greco-Roman and Jewish work ethics. In Greco-Roman elite culture, manual labor was often looked down upon as unworthy for free citizens—it was slaves and lower classes who worked with their hands. Philosophers and wealthy citizens could live off the support of others (the patron system) or inheritance. Among Cynic philosophers, it was common to live on alms while traveling around and teaching.

In contrast to this, Paul highlights the Jewish tradition in which even rabbis had a trade. Paul himself was a tentmaker and worked "night and day" (v. 8) so as not to be a burden. This was unusual for traveling teachers in the Greco-Roman world and served as a deliberate example. The problem in Thessalonica may have been that some, perhaps due to expectations of the Lord’s imminent return, had stopped working and instead lived off the community while engaging in "busybody behavior" (v. 11).

The prefix peri- ("around") suggests that they go around meddling in others’ affairs, gossiping, or causing trouble. This word was used in antiquity to describe people who were curious about what did not concern them and those involved in magic or occult practices. Here it likely points to individuals who spent their time creating unrest in the church, perhaps with speculations about the end times.

Παράδοσις (paradosis) – "tradition"

The term "tradition" or "teaching handed down" (v. 6) was central in both Jewish and early Christian contexts. It referred to oral instruction passed from teacher to student with authority. Paul reminds the Thessalonians that they received specific teaching directly from him, and that this tradition is binding for their lifestyle, not just their belief.

In verse 17, Paul mentions that he writes the greeting "with my own hand" as a "sign" (σημεῖον) in all his letters. In light of earlier warnings in the letter against false letters written in Paul’s name (cf. 2:2), this own-handed signature carries extra significance as a mark of authenticity.
