Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and brother of James, to those who are called, loved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ:

May mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you.

Beloved, while I was eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I found it necessary to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints.

For certain people have slipped in among you—people long ago marked out for this condemnation—godless men who twist the grace of our God into a license for sensuality and who deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

Now I want to remind you, though you already know all this, that Jesus, who saved a people out of the land of Egypt, later destroyed those who did not believe;

and the angels who did not keep to their own domain but abandoned their proper dwelling he has kept in eternal chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day.

So also Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which in the same way indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, stand as an example, undergoing the punishment of eternal fire.

Yet in the very same way these men, carried along by their dreams, defile the flesh, reject authority, and slander the glorious ones.

But when Michael the archangel disputed with the devil about the body of Moses, he did not dare to bring a slanderous accusation against him, but said, "The Lord rebuke you!"

These people, however, slander what they do not understand, and by what they know only by instinct, like unreasoning animals, they are destroyed.

Woe to them! For they have taken the way of Cain, they have thrown themselves into Balaam's error for profit, and they have perished in Korah's rebellion.

These are hidden reefs at your love feasts, feasting with you while they shepherd only themselves without fear; waterless clouds driven along by the winds; barren trees in late autumn, twice dead, torn up by the roots;

wild waves of the sea, foaming up their own shame; wandering stars, for whom the gloom of darkness has been reserved forever.

It was also about these that Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied when he said: "Look, the Lord is coming with tens of thousands of his holy ones,

to execute judgment on all and to convict every godless person of all the ungodly deeds they have committed and of all the harsh words that godless sinners have spoken against him."

These are grumblers and malcontents, following their own desires; their mouths spew arrogant words, and they flatter people to gain advantage.

But you, beloved, remember the words spoken beforehand by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ.

They told you that in the last time there would be scoffers, following their own godless desires.

These are the ones who create divisions—worldly people, devoid of the Spirit.

But you, beloved, build yourselves up on your most holy faith, pray in the Holy Spirit,

and keep yourselves in the love of God as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life.

Have mercy on those who doubt;

save others by snatching them from the fire; and to still others show mercy mixed with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh.

Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glory without blemish and with great joy—

to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, power, and authority, before all time, now, and forever. Amen.

People

Jude and James (v. 1): The author identifies himself as "Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and brother of James." This James is almost certainly James "the Lord's brother," the leader of the church in Jerusalem (Gal 1:19; Acts 15). By calling himself the brother of James rather than the brother of Jesus, Jude demonstrates humility—he defines himself through his more well-known brother and his service to Christ, not through kinship with Jesus.

Cain, Balaam, and Korah (v. 11): These three figures from the Old Testament represent a triad of rebellion that was well known in Jewish tradition. Cain stood for envy and murder (Gen 4), Balaam for greed and error (Num 22–24; 31:16), and Korah for rebellion against God-given authority (Num 16).
