The Rebellion Against Moses and Aaron

Korah, together with Dathan, Abiram and On, as well as 250 leaders of the congregation, rose up against Moses and Aaron, claiming that the entire congregation was holy and that Moses and Aaron had exalted themselves above the Lord's assembly.

1Now Korah son of Izhar, son of Kohath, son of Levi, took action, along with Dathan and Abiram sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth, descendants of Reuben.
2They rose up against Moses, together with two hundred and fifty men of Israel, leaders of the community, appointed members of the assembly, men of reputation.
3They gathered against Moses and Aaron and said to them, "You have gone too far! The whole community is holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them. Why then do you set yourselves above the LORD's assembly?"

Moses' Challenge with Incense Burners

Moses challenged Korah and his followers to come forward with incense burners before the Lord, so that God Himself could show whom He had chosen.

6Do this: take censers for yourselves, Korah and all your followers.
7Tomorrow put fire in them and lay incense on them before the LORD. The man the LORD chooses will be the holy one. You Levites have gone too far!"
8Moses also said to Korah, "Listen now, you Levites!
9Is it not enough for you that the God of Israel has set you apart from the rest of the community of Israel and brought you near to himself, to do the work at the LORD's dwelling and to stand before the community and serve them?
10He has brought you near, you and all your fellow Levites with you, and now you seek the priesthood as well!
11So it is against the LORD that you and all your followers have banded together. And Aaron—what is he, that you should grumble against him?"

The Glory of the Lord Appears

The glory of the Lord appeared to the entire congregation, and God threatened to destroy the whole assembly, but Moses and Aaron interceded on their behalf.

19When Korah had gathered the whole community against them at the entrance to the tent of meeting, the glory of the LORD appeared to the entire community.
20The LORD said to Moses and Aaron,
21"Separate yourselves from this community, and I will consume them in an instant."
22But they fell facedown and cried out, "O God, God of the spirits of all flesh, will you be angry with the whole community when only one man sins?"

The Earth Swallows Korah and His Followers

The earth opened up and swallowed Korah, Dathan and Abiram along with their families and all their possessions. They went down alive into Sheol as a divine sign of judgment.

31As soon as he finished speaking these words, the ground under them split open.
32The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and their households, along with all Korah's men and all their possessions.
33They went down alive to the realm of the dead, with everything they owned. The earth closed over them, and they perished from among the assembly.
34At their cries, all the Israelites around them fled, shouting, "The earth is going to swallow us too!"
35And fire came out from the LORD and consumed the two hundred and fifty men who were offering the incense.

The Incense Burners Become a Memorial

The incense burners of the 250 men who were consumed by fire were beaten into plates to cover the altar, serving as a warning sign for the children of Israel.

Warning in the New Testament

Jude's letter mentions Korah's rebellion as a warning example for those who rebel against God's appointed order and authority.

11Woe to them! For they have taken the way of Cain, they have thrown themselves into Balaam's error for profit, and they have perished in Korah's rebellion.
