Wisdom
Wisdom is more than knowledge—it is seeing life from God's perspective and living accordingly. The Bible says that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. True wisdom comes from God and is shown in a life marked by righteousness, humility, and reverence for God.
The Beginning of Wisdom
The fear of the Lord is the foundation of all true wisdom.
7The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and discipline.
יִרְאַ֣ת יְ֭הוָה רֵאשִׁ֣ית דָּ֑עַת חָכְמָ֥ה וּ֝מוּסָ֗ר אֱוִילִ֥ים בָּֽזוּ׃ פ
10The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
תְּחִלַּ֣ת חָ֭כְמָה יִרְאַ֣ת יְהוָ֑ה וְדַ֖עַת קְדֹשִׁ֣ים בִּינָֽה׃
10The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all who practice them gain good insight. His praise stands forever.
רֵ֘אשִׁ֤ית חָכְמָ֨ה ׀ יִרְאַ֬ת יְהוָ֗ה שֵׂ֣כֶל ט֭וֹב לְכָל־עֹשֵׂיהֶ֑ם תְּ֝הִלָּת֗וֹ עֹמֶ֥דֶת לָעַֽד׃
Seek Wisdom
The Bible encourages us to seek wisdom as the greatest treasure.
5Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or turn away from them.
קְנֵ֣ה חָ֭כְמָה קְנֵ֣ה בִינָ֑ה אַל־תִּשְׁכַּ֥ח וְאַל־תֵּ֝֗ט מֵֽאִמְרֵי־פִֽי׃
6Do not forsake her, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you.
אַל־תַּעַזְבֶ֥הָ וְתִשְׁמְרֶ֑ךָּ אֱהָבֶ֥הָ וְתִצְּרֶֽךָּ׃
7Wisdom begins here: get wisdom. Whatever else you gain, gain understanding.
רֵאשִׁ֣ית חָ֭כְמָה קְנֵ֣ה חָכְמָ֑ה וּבְכָל־קִ֝נְיָנְךָ֗ קְנֵ֣ה בִינָֽה׃
13Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, the one who gains understanding.
אַשְׁרֵ֣י אָ֭דָם מָצָ֣א חָכְמָ֑ה וְ֝אָדָ֗ם יָפִ֥יק תְּבוּנָֽה׃
14For gaining her is better than gaining silver, and her yield better than fine gold.
כִּ֤י ט֣וֹב סַ֭חְרָהּ מִסְּחַר־כָּ֑סֶף וּ֝מֵחָר֗וּץ תְּבוּאָתָֽהּ׃
15She is more precious than jewels; nothing you desire can compare with her.
יְקָ֣רָה הִ֭יא *מפניים **מִפְּנִינִ֑ים וְכָל־חֲ֝פָצֶ֗יךָ לֹ֣א יִֽשְׁווּ־בָֽהּ׃
5If any of you lacks wisdom, ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.
Εἰ δέ τις ὑμῶν λείπεται σοφίας, αἰτείτω παρὰ τοῦ διδόντος θεοῦ πᾶσιν ἁπλῶς καὶ ⸀μὴ ὀνειδίζοντος, καὶ δοθήσεται αὐτῷ·
Wisdom from God
God gives wisdom to those who ask for it.
5If any of you lacks wisdom, ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.
Εἰ δέ τις ὑμῶν λείπεται σοφίας, αἰτείτω παρὰ τοῦ διδόντος θεοῦ πᾶσιν ἁπλῶς καὶ ⸀μὴ ὀνειδίζοντος, καὶ δοθήσεται αὐτῷ·
6But let him ask in faith, without doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind.
αἰτείτω δὲ ἐν πίστει, μηδὲν διακρινόμενος, ὁ γὰρ διακρινόμενος ἔοικεν κλύδωνι θαλάσσης ἀνεμιζομένῳ καὶ ῥιπιζομένῳ·
6For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
כִּֽי־יְ֭הוָה יִתֵּ֣ן חָכְמָ֑ה מִ֝פִּ֗יו דַּ֣עַת וּתְבוּנָֽה׃
7He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; he is a shield to those who walk in integrity,
*וצפן **יִצְפֹּ֣ן לַ֭יְשָׁרִים תּוּשִׁיָּ֑ה מָ֝גֵ֗ן לְהֹ֣לְכֵי תֹֽם׃
9So give your servant a listening heart to judge your people, to discern between good and evil—for who is able to judge this great people of yours?"
וְנָתַתָּ֨ לְעַבְדְּךָ֜ לֵ֤ב שֹׁמֵ֙עַ֙ לִשְׁפֹּ֣ט אֶֽת־עַמְּךָ֔ לְהָבִ֖ין בֵּֽין־ט֣וֹב לְרָ֑ע כִּ֣י מִ֤י יוּכַל֙ לִשְׁפֹּ֔ט אֶת־עַמְּךָ֥ הַכָּבֵ֖ד הַזֶּֽה׃
10It pleased the LORD that Solomon had asked for this.
וַיִּיטַ֥ב הַדָּבָ֖ר בְּעֵינֵ֣י אֲדֹנָ֑י כִּ֚י שָׁאַ֣ל שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה אֶת־הַדָּבָ֖ר הַזֶּֽה׃
12I now do as you have asked. I give you a heart so wise and discerning that no one like you has ever lived before you, and no one like you will arise after you.
הִנֵּ֥ה עָשִׂ֖יתִי כִּדְבָרֶ֑יךָ הִנֵּ֣ה ׀ נָתַ֣תִּי לְךָ֗ לֵ֚ב חָכָ֣ם וְנָב֔וֹן אֲשֶׁ֤ר כָּמ֙וֹךָ֙ לֹא־הָיָ֣ה לְפָנֶ֔יךָ וְאַחֲרֶ֖יךָ לֹא־יָק֥וּם כָּמֽוֹךָ׃
Wisdom from Above
God's wisdom is different from the world's—pure, peaceable, and merciful.
17But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peace-loving, considerate, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.
ἡ δὲ ἄνωθεν σοφία πρῶτον μὲν ἁγνή ἐστιν, ἔπειτα εἰρηνική, ἐπιεικής, εὐπειθής, μεστὴ ἐλέους καὶ καρπῶν ἀγαθῶν, ⸀ἀδιάκριτος, ἀνυπόκριτος·
18And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
καρπὸς ⸀δὲ δικαιοσύνης ἐν εἰρήνῃ σπείρεται τοῖς ποιοῦσιν εἰρήνην.
20Where is the wise one? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?
ποῦ σοφός; ποῦ γραμματεύς; ποῦ συζητητὴς τοῦ αἰῶνος τούτου; οὐχὶ ἐμώρανεν ὁ θεὸς τὴν σοφίαν τοῦ ⸀κόσμου;
25For God's foolishness is wiser than human beings, and God's weakness is stronger than human beings.
ὅτι τὸ μωρὸν τοῦ θεοῦ σοφώτερον τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἐστίν, καὶ τὸ ἀσθενὲς τοῦ θεοῦ ἰσχυρότερον τῶν ⸀ἀνθρώπων.
6Yet we do speak wisdom among the mature—though not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are being brought to nothing.
Σοφίαν δὲ λαλοῦμεν ἐν τοῖς τελείοις, σοφίαν δὲ οὐ τοῦ αἰῶνος τούτου οὐδὲ τῶν ἀρχόντων τοῦ αἰῶνος τούτου τῶν καταργουμένων·
7No, we speak God's wisdom, hidden in mystery, which God determined beforehand, before the ages, for our glory.
ἀλλὰ λαλοῦμεν ⸂θεοῦ σοφίαν⸃ ἐν μυστηρίῳ, τὴν ἀποκεκρυμμένην, ἣν προώρισεν ὁ θεὸς πρὸ τῶν αἰώνων εἰς δόξαν ἡμῶν·
Christ—the Wisdom of God
In Christ are hidden all the treasures of wisdom.
24but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
αὐτοῖς δὲ τοῖς κλητοῖς, Ἰουδαίοις τε καὶ Ἕλλησιν, Χριστὸν θεοῦ δύναμιν καὶ θεοῦ σοφίαν.
30It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God — our righteousness, holiness, and redemption —
ἐξ αὐτοῦ δὲ ὑμεῖς ἐστε ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ, ὃς ἐγενήθη ⸂σοφία ἡμῖν⸃ ἀπὸ θεοῦ, δικαιοσύνη τε καὶ ἁγιασμὸς καὶ ἀπολύτρωσις,
3in whom all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge lie hidden.
ἐν ᾧ εἰσιν πάντες οἱ θησαυροὶ τῆς σοφίας ⸀καὶ γνώσεως ἀπόκρυφοι.
