I charge you before God and Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom:

preach the word; be ready whether the time is right or not; correct, rebuke, and encourage—with all patience and careful teaching.

For the time is coming when people will not put up with sound teaching. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around themselves a crowd of teachers to tickle their ears,

and they will turn their ears away from the truth and wander off after myths.

But you—keep a clear head in everything, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, carry out your ministry to the full.

As for me, I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come.

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but to all who have loved his appearing.

Do your best to come to me soon.

For Demas, in love with this present age, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica; Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia.

Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful to me for service.

Tychicus I have sent to Ephesus.

When you come, bring the cloak I left with Carpus at Troas, and the scrolls—especially the parchments.

Alexander the metalworker did me a great deal of harm; the Lord will repay him according to his deeds.

Be on your guard against him too, for he strongly opposed our message.

At my first defense no one stood by me; everyone abandoned me. May it not be held against them.

But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the nations might hear it. And I was rescued from the lion's mouth.

The Lord will rescue me from every evil work and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

People

This chapter mentions a remarkable number of individuals, offering insight into Paul's network toward the end of his life. Demas (v. 10) is also mentioned in Colossians 4:14 and Philemon 24 as Paul's fellow worker, but here he has deserted the apostle. Crescens is known only from this verse. Titus was one of Paul's most trusted coworkers, known from Galatians and the letter bearing his name. Luke, the physician and Gospel writer, remained faithful to Paul. Mark (John Mark) had previously caused a split between Paul and Barnabas (Acts 15:37-39), but here he is described as "useful."

Tychicus (v. 12) was a coworker from the province of Asia who is also mentioned in Acts 20:4, Ephesians 6:21, and Colossians 4:7. Carpus (v. 13) is otherwise unknown. Alexander the coppersmith (v. 14) may possibly be the same person mentioned in 1 Timothy 1:20. Priscilla and Aquila (v. 19) were the well-known couple who hosted a house church and worked with Paul in Corinth and Ephesus. Onesiphorus is also mentioned in 2 Timothy 1:16-18. Erastus (v. 20) may be identical to "the city treasurer" (οἰκονόμος τῆς πόλεως) mentioned in Romans 16:23 – an inscription found in Corinth mentions an Erastus who funded street work. Linus (v. 21) is identified in early Christian tradition as Peter's successor and the first bishop of Rome after the apostles.

Places

The chapter paints a geographical picture of the spread of the early church. Thessalonica (v. 10), the capital of the Roman province of Macedonia, was an important hub along the Via Egnatia. Galatia may refer either to the ethnic region in central Asia Minor or to the larger Roman province. Dalmatia (v. 10), present-day Croatia (and parts of Bosnia-Herzegovina and Montenegro), was part of the province of Illyricum along the Adriatic coast – this shows that the gospel had spread to the Balkans.

Troas (v. 13) was an important port city in northwest Asia Minor, near ancient Troy, and served as a link between Asia and Europe. Corinth (v. 20) was the capital of the province of Achaia and a significant commercial center. Miletus (v. 20), an old port city south of Ephesus, was the place where Paul had previously delivered his farewell address to the elders of the Ephesian church (Acts 20:17-38).

Events and Customs

The expression "I am already being poured out as a drink offering" (σπένδομαι, v. 6) draws imagery from Greco-Roman and Jewish sacrificial practices, where wine was poured over a sacrifice to conclude the ritual. Paul uses this as a metaphor for his impending death – his life completes an offering already given in service.

The reference to "my first defense" (ἀπολογία, v. 16) reflects the Roman legal system. A prima actio (first hearing) was a preliminary court proceeding where charges were presented and the accused could defend themselves. That "no one stood with" Paul may mean he lacked an advocatus (defense attorney) or character witnesses, which were crucial in Roman trials. The phrase "delivered from the lion's mouth" (v. 17) is likely metaphorical for a death sentence or may allude to Emperor Nero, who was occasionally compared to a lion in literature.

The word φαιλόνης (failonēs, v. 13), here translated "cloak," was a heavy, circular outer garment with a hole for the head, used as protection against cold and rain – practical for Paul in a cold prison.
