Paul, an apostle—sent not from human beings, nor by any human being, but by Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead—

and all the brothers who are with me, to the churches of Galatia:

Grace and peace to you from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ,

who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father,

to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ, and turning to a different gospel—

which is no gospel at all—except that there are some who are throwing you into confusion and want to distort the gospel of Christ.

But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.

As we have said before, so now I say again: if anyone preaches to you a gospel other than the one you received, let him be accursed.

For am I now seeking the approval of people, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still pleasing people, I would not be a servant of Christ.

For I want you to know, brothers, that the gospel I preached is not of human origin.

I did not receive it from any human being, nor was I taught it; it came by a revelation of Jesus Christ.

You have heard of my former way of life in Judaism, how relentlessly I persecuted the church of God and tried to destroy it.

I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my contemporaries among my people, and was far more zealous for the traditions of my fathers.

But when God, who set me apart from my mother's womb and called me by his grace, was pleased

to reveal his Son in me so that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately consult with flesh and blood,

nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me. Instead I went away into Arabia, and later returned to Damascus.

Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to get to know Cephas, and I stayed with him fifteen days.

I saw none of the other apostles—only James, the Lord's brother.

In what I am writing to you, I assure you before God that I am not lying.

Then I went to the regions of Syria and Cilicia.

I was personally unknown to the churches of Judea that are in Christ.

They only kept hearing, "The man who once persecuted us is now preaching the faith he once tried to destroy."

And they glorified God because of me.

People

Cephas (Peter) is mentioned in verse 18 as the one Paul visited in Jerusalem. Cephas is the Aramaic form of the name (Κηφᾶς), while Peter is the Greek translation (Πέτρος) – both mean "rock." The Greek verb ἱστορῆσαι (historēsai) means more than a casual visit – it implies to "investigate" or "get acquainted with," as a historian would seek out a source. This was a purposeful visit to learn from an eyewitness to the life and work of Jesus.

James, the Lord's brother (verse 19) was not one of the twelve apostles, but Jesus' brother (τὸν ἀδελφὸν τοῦ κυρίου) who became a central leader in the Jerusalem church. Josephus mentions him in Jewish Antiquities (20.200) and describes his execution in 62 AD under the high priest Ananus. James' position alongside Peter shows that leadership in the early church was not limited to the original twelve.

Places

Arabia (verse 17) refers primarily not to the Arabian Peninsula as we know it today, but to the Nabataean kingdom which extended from areas east of Damascus southward toward the Sinai Peninsula. The capital Petra was the center of this prosperous trading empire. What Paul did there – whether he preached, meditated, or worked – the text says nothing about.

Damascus was an ancient city and a major trade hub in Syria. It had a significant Jewish population, which explains why Paul traveled there to persecute Christians. The city was under Nabataean influence at times, and 2 Corinthians 11:32 mentions that the Nabataean king Aretas IV had a governor there.

Syria and Cilicia (verse 21) formed a Roman double province. Cilicia was Paul's home region with Tarsus as its main city. The fact that he worked there for several years before his second visit to Jerusalem shows that his early missionary activity was independent of the apostles in Jerusalem.

Key Terms

Ἀνάθεμα (anathema, verses 8–9) comes from the Greek translation of the Hebrew cherem – something "devoted to destruction" or handed over to God's judgment. In the Old Testament, this was used for what was to be completely destroyed (cf. Joshua 6:17–18). Paul's use of this strong expression – even against a hypothetical angel – underscores how seriously he regarded the distortion of the gospel.

Ἰουδαϊσμός (Ioudaismos, verses 13–14) is one of the earliest occurrences of this term in Greek literature. It describes not just Jewish religion, but an active way of life characterized by zeal for the law and traditions. Paul uses it to characterize his former existence – a way of life where he "advanced" (προέκοπτον) beyond his peers (συνηλικιώτας) in zeal for the traditions.

Πατρικῶν παραδόσεων (traditions of the fathers, verse 14) refers to the oral law and Pharisaic interpretive traditions that were later written down in the Mishnah and Talmud. This was more than written Torah – it included rabbinic interpretations considered binding.

Events and Customs

Paul's persecution of the church (verses 13, 23) is described with two strong Greek verbs: ἐδίωκον (persecuted intensely) and ἐπόρθουν (attempted to destroy/ravage). The latter verb was used for the military destruction of cities. This emphasizes the violence of his former activity.

Pharisaic education and zeal, which Paul describes in verses 13–14, were characterized by intense dedication to study and practice. Acts 22:3 tells us that he studied under Gamaliel in Jerusalem. The term "zeal" (ζηλωτής) had strong connotations in Jewish tradition and pointed back to Phinehas (Numbers 25:11) and Elijah (1 Kings 19:10) as models of uncompromising faithfulness. Persecution of apostates could be viewed as a pious act within this tradition.
