The men of Ephraim were mustered, and they crossed over to Zaphon and said to Jephthah, "Why did you cross over to fight the Ammonites without calling us to go with you? We will burn your house down over your head!"

Jephthah answered them, "I and my people were locked in a bitter struggle with the Ammonites. I called you, but you did not rescue me from their hand.

When I saw that you would not save me, I took my life in my own hands and crossed over against the Ammonites, and the LORD gave them into my hand. So why have you come up against me today to fight me?"

Then Jephthah gathered all the men of Gilead and fought Ephraim, and the men of Gilead struck Ephraim down, because they had said, "You Gileadites are nothing but fugitives from Ephraim, living in the midst of Ephraim and Manasseh."

The Gileadites seized the fords of the Jordan against Ephraim, and whenever an Ephraimite fugitive said, "Let me cross over," the men of Gilead would ask him, "Are you an Ephraimite?" If he said, "No,"

they would say to him, "Then say 'Shibboleth.'" And he would say, "Sibboleth," for he could not pronounce it correctly. Then they would seize him and kill him at the fords of the Jordan. Forty-two thousand of Ephraim fell at that time.

Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died and was buried in one of the towns of Gilead.

After him Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel.

He had thirty sons, and thirty daughters whom he gave in marriage, and he brought in thirty daughters for his sons from elsewhere. He judged Israel seven years.

Then Ibzan died and was buried in Bethlehem.

After him Elon the Zebulunite judged Israel, and he judged Israel ten years.

Then Elon the Zebulunite died and was buried at Aijalon in the land of Zebulun.

After him Abdon son of Hillel, from Pirathon, judged Israel.

He had forty sons and thirty grandsons, who rode on seventy donkeys. He judged Israel eight years.

Then Abdon son of Hillel, from Pirathon, died and was buried at Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the hill country of the Amalekites.

The three "lesser" judges—Ibzan from Bethlehem, Elon from Zebulun, and Abdon from Pirathon—are presented with brief, formulaic descriptions. Their large families and wealth (Ibzan with 60 children; Abdon with 40 sons and 30 grandsons who rode on 70 donkeys) indicate high social status. Donkeys were status symbols in this period, and the high number demonstrated political influence and prosperity.

The fords of the Jordan played a strategic role in the conflict between Gilead and Ephraim. These crossing points were crucial for communication and trade between areas east and west of the Jordan, and whoever controlled them controlled the movement of people and goods.

Bethlehem (vv. 8, 10), from where Ibzan came, may refer either to the well-known city in Judah or to a lesser-known Bethlehem in Zebulun (cf. Josh 19:15). Pirathon (vv. 13, 15) lay in the hill country of Ephraim and is commonly identified with today’s Fer'ata, about 10 km southwest of Shechem. The place is described as lying "in the mountains of Amalek," which may refer to an older name for the region.

The Shibboleth test (v. 6) is one of the earliest documented examples of using linguistic markers to identify enemies. The Ephraimite dialect apparently lacked the shin sound (שׁ), so they pronounced the word as "sibboleth" instead of "shibboleth." The word means either "ear of grain" or "stream/river" in Hebrew. This test revealed that even within Israel there were significant dialect differences among the tribes, reflecting a decentralized social structure during the period of the judges.

The tribal conflict between Ephraim and Gilead (vv. 1–6) follows a pattern also seen in Judges 8:1–3, where Ephraim complained about not being called to battle. While Gideon resolved the conflict diplomatically, here it resulted in civil war with 42,000 dead. Ephraim’s aggressive threat to burn down Jephthah’s house reflects the tribal rivalry and pride that characterized this period.
