Jerubbaal—that is, Gideon—rose early, and all the people with him, and they camped beside the spring of Harod. The camp of Midian lay to the north of them, by the hill of Moreh in the valley.

The LORD said to Gideon, "You have too many people with you for me to give Midian into their hands. Israel might boast against me and say, 'My own hand saved me.'

Now then, announce to the people: 'Whoever is afraid and trembling may turn back and leave Mount Gilead.'" Twenty-two thousand of the people turned back, and ten thousand remained.

Then the LORD said to Gideon, "There are still too many. Take them down to the water, and I will sift them for you there. The one I tell you shall go with you, he shall go; and anyone I tell you shall not go with you, he shall not go."

So he took the people down to the water, and the LORD said to Gideon, "Everyone who laps up the water with his tongue as a dog laps, set him apart on one side; and everyone who kneels down to drink, set him on the other."

The number of those who lapped, hand to mouth, was three hundred men. All the rest of the people knelt down to drink the water.

The LORD said to Gideon, "With the three hundred men who lapped I will save you and give Midian into your hand. Let all the others go, each to his own place."

So the three hundred took the people's provisions and their trumpets, and Gideon sent all the other Israelites home to their tents, keeping only the three hundred men. Now the camp of Midian lay below him in the valley.

That same night the LORD said to him, "Get up, go down against the camp, for I have given it into your hand.

But if you are afraid to go down, take your servant Purah with you to the camp,

and listen to what they are saying. Afterward your hands will be strengthened, and you will go down against the camp." So he went down with his servant Purah to the outposts of the armed men in the camp.

The Midianites, the Amalekites, and all the people of the east lay sprawled across the valley, as thick as locusts, and their camels were beyond counting, like the sand on the seashore.

When Gideon arrived, a man was telling his comrade a dream. "Listen," he said, "I had a dream: a round loaf of barley bread came tumbling into the camp of Midian. It struck a tent, and the tent turned over and collapsed."

His comrade answered, "That can be nothing but the sword of Gideon son of Joash, the Israelite. God has given Midian and the whole camp into his hand."

When Gideon heard the dream and its interpretation, he bowed down in worship. He returned to the camp of Israel and said, "Get up! The LORD has given the camp of Midian into your hands."

He divided the three hundred men into three companies and put a trumpet in every man's hand, along with an empty jar and a torch inside the jar.

He told them, "Watch me and do the same. When I reach the edge of the camp, do exactly as I do.

When I and all who are with me blow our trumpets, then you blow yours all around the camp and shout, 'For the LORD and for Gideon!'"

Gideon and the hundred men with him came to the edge of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just after the guard had been changed. They blew their trumpets and smashed the jars in their hands.

The three companies blew their trumpets and shattered their jars. Holding the torches in their left hands and the trumpets in their right hands to blow, they shouted, "A sword for the LORD and for Gideon!"

Each man held his position around the camp, while the whole camp ran, crying out and fleeing.

As the three hundred trumpets sounded, the LORD set every man's sword against his comrade throughout the camp, and the army fled as far as Beth Shittah toward Zererah, to the edge of Abel Meholah near Tabbath.

The Israelites were called out from Naphtali, Asher, and all Manasseh, and they pursued the Midianites.

Gideon also sent messengers throughout the hill country of Ephraim, saying, "Come down against Midian and seize the waters ahead of them as far as Beth Barah, and the Jordan as well." So all the men of Ephraim were called out, and they seized the waters as far as Beth Barah, and the Jordan.

They captured the two Midianite commanders, Oreb and Zeeb. They killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb and Zeeb at the winepress of Zeeb, and they pursued the Midianites. Then they brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on the other side of the Jordan.

Sammanfattning2

Kapitel 7

Main Theme: God gives Israel victory over the Midianites through Gideon’s small army of 300 men to show that salvation comes from Him alone.

Content: God reduces Gideon’s army from 32,000 to 300 men through two tests—first by sending home those who were afraid, then through the water test at which only those who lapped the water were chosen. A Midianite soldier’s dream about a barley loaf that overturns a tent confirms God’s promise of victory. The 300 attack during the night with shofars, empty jars, and torches, shouting, "A sword for the Lord and for Gideon!" The Lord creates panic so that the Midianites turn their swords against each other and flee.

Key Words/Images:

The Chosen 300: God’s deliberate reduction of the army shows that victory is His work, not human strength.
The Water Test: The selection method at the spring of Harod where the way they drank determined who would fight.
The Barley Loaf in the Dream: A symbol of Gideon overturning Midian’s camp—a confirmation of God’s promise.
Shofars and Jars: Unconventional "weapons" that emphasize that the battle belongs to the Lord.

Historisk kontext

Historical and Cultural Context for Judges 7

People

Gideon/Jerubba'al bears both names in this chapter. "Jerubba'al" ("Let Ba'al contend") refers back to the event in chapter 6 where he tore down the altar of Ba'al. Pura is Gideon's servant who accompanies him on reconnaissance of the Midianite camp. Servants in this role often served as witnesses and companions during dangerous missions. Oreb and Ze'eb are Midianite chieftains whose names mean "raven" and "wolf" – animal names common among semi-nomadic peoples, often indicating warrior traits.

Places

En-Harod ("trembling spring") lies at the foot of Mount Gilboa, traditionally identified with 'Ain Jalud. The name may refer to the soldiers' fear or to the movement of the water. Moreh Hill in the north of the valley gave the Midianites a strategic vantage point. Beth-Shittah, Zererah, Abel-Meholah, and Tabbath mark escape routes eastward toward the Jordan. Abel-Melah is later known as the hometown of the prophet Elisha (1 Kings 19:16). Beth-Barah by the Jordan was an important ford that the tribe of Ephraim could block.

Events and Customs

The reduction of the army through the water test has parallels in ancient military selection processes. Those who lapped water from their hands remained alert and ready, unlike those who knelt down and lost situational awareness. The middle watch (Hebrew: ha'ashmoret hattikhona) refers to the three-part watch system – the attack came right after the change of guard when the new sentries had just been posted (v. 19).

Dream interpretation was highly regarded in the ancient Near East. The fact that a Midianite soldier interpreted the dream about the barley loaf as Gideon's victory shows widespread knowledge of Israel's leader and underscores psychological warfare. Barley bread was food for the poor compared to wheat, symbolizing Israel's apparent inferiority.

Key Terms

Shofar (שׁוֹפָר) was a ram's horn trumpet used for religious and military signals. Three hundred horns sounding simultaneously would create enormous chaos. Kaddim rekim (כַּדִּים רֵקִים) were empty clay jars that concealed the torches until the dramatic moment. Breaking them created sudden light and sound that confused the enemy. The cry "For the Lord and for Gideon!" (v. 18) expands to "A sword for the Lord and for Gideon!" (v. 20) – a combination of divine and human leadership, serving as a theological reminder that victory belongs to God.

Chapter-Specific Findings

Archaeological investigations in the Jezreel Valley confirm the strategic importance of this area as a thoroughfare for trade and invasion armies. Discoveries of Midianite pottery from the late Bronze Age/early Iron Age in the Jordan Valley support accounts of their presence in the region.
