Maturity and readiness for service
The number thirty marks maturity and readiness for service. Priests began their service at the age of thirty (Num 4:3). David became king over Israel when he was thirty (2 Sam 5:4). Joseph was thirty when he entered Pharaoh's service (Gen 41:46). Jesus began his public ministry when he was about thirty years old (Luke 3:23). Thus, the number thirty consistently points to the time when a person is mature enough to enter their God-given calling. In rabbinic tradition, thirty is regarded as the age of full strength (koach), as expressed in Pirke Avot 5:21: "Thirty years – for full strength." This supports the biblical pattern where service begins at this age. Thirty silver coins were the price for a slave according to the Mosaic Law (Exod 21:32). The prophet Zechariah uses this amount ironically to describe the low value the people placed on the Lord (Zech 11:12–13), a text that in the New Testament is linked to Judas' betrayal price (Matt 26:15; 27:9).*
