Joktan's Sons and Their Settlements

Obal and his brothers settled in the mountainous regions to the east, in the area from Mesha to Sephar. These groups became ancestors of several Arab peoples.

29Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab. All these were the sons of Joktan.

Origins of the Nations

Obal is part of the great genealogy that describes how the nations of the earth spread after Noah's time, showing God's plan for humanity after the flood.

31These are the sons of Shem, by their clans and languages, in their lands and nations.

Repeated in the Genealogies of Chronicles

In 1 Chronicles, the genealogy is repeated, where Obal is likely mentioned under the alternative name form Ebal, as a son of Joktan.

Descendants of Eber

Through his father Joktan, Obal is a descendant of Eber, who in turn descended from Shem. Eber is regarded as the ancestor of the Hebrew peoples, and Joktan's line represents the southern branch of this lineage.

25Two sons were born to Eber. One was named Peleg, because in his days the earth was divided; his brother's name was Joktan.
