Then Joseph gave this order to his steward: "Fill the men's sacks with as much food as they can carry, and put each man's silver in the mouth of his sack.

And put my cup, the silver one, in the mouth of the youngest one's sack, along with the silver for his grain." And he did as Joseph told him.

At first light the men were sent on their way with their donkeys.

They had not gone far from the city when Joseph said to his steward, "Go after those men at once, and when you overtake them, say to them, 'Why have you repaid evil for good?

Is this not the cup my lord drinks from, and the one he uses for divination? You have done wrong in what you did.'"

So he overtook them and repeated these words to them.

They said to him, "Why does my lord say such things? Far be it from your servants to do anything like that!

Look, the silver we found in the mouths of our sacks we brought back to you from the land of Canaan. Why then would we steal silver or gold from your master's house?

If it is found with any of your servants, let him die, and the rest of us will become my lord's slaves."

"Very well then," he said, "let it be as you say: the one with whom it is found shall be my slave, but the rest of you will be innocent."

Each of them quickly lowered his sack to the ground and opened it.

He searched, beginning with the oldest and ending with the youngest, and the cup was found in Benjamin's sack.

At this they tore their clothes. Then each loaded his donkey and they returned to the city.

When Judah and his brothers came to Joseph's house, he was still there, and they threw themselves to the ground before him.

Joseph said to them, "What is this you have done? Did you not know that a man like me can surely divine?"

Judah answered, "What can we say to my lord? What can we plead, and how can we clear ourselves? God has uncovered the guilt of your servants. Here we are, my lord's slaves—we ourselves and the one in whose hand the cup was found."

But Joseph said, "Far be it from me to do such a thing. The man in whose hand the cup was found shall be my slave. The rest of you go up in peace to your father."

Then Judah came near to him and said, "Please, my lord, let your servant speak a word in my lord's ears, and do not let your anger burn against your servant, for you are like Pharaoh himself.

My lord asked his servants, 'Do you have a father or a brother?'

And we said to my lord, 'We have an aged father, and there is a young son born to him in his old age. His brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother's children, and his father loves him.'

Then you said to your servants, 'Bring him down to me, so that I may set my eyes on him.'

We said to my lord, 'The boy cannot leave his father; if he leaves him, his father will die.'

But you said to your servants, 'Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you will not see my face again.'

When we went up to your servant my father, we told him what my lord had said.

Then our father said, 'Go back and buy us a little food.'

But we said, 'We cannot go down. Only if our youngest brother is with us will we go, for we cannot see the man's face unless our youngest brother is with us.'

Your servant my father said to us, 'You know that my wife bore me two sons.

One of them went away from me, and I said, "Surely he has been torn to pieces," and I have not seen him since.

If you take this one from me too and harm comes to him, you will bring my gray head down to the grave in sorrow.'

So now, if I come to your servant my father and the boy is not with us—since his life is bound up with the boy's life—

when he sees that the boy is not there, he will die, and your servants will bring the gray head of your servant our father down to the grave in grief.

For your servant pledged himself for the boy to my father, saying, 'If I do not bring him back to you, I will bear the blame before my father all my life.'

So now, please let your servant remain as my lord's slave in place of the boy, and let the boy go back with his brothers.

For how can I go up to my father if the boy is not with me? I could not bear to see the misery that would come upon my father."

In this chapter, Judah emerges as the central spokesperson among the brothers. His long speech (verses 18–34) is the longest continuous speech in all of Genesis. This marks a significant development from chapter 37, where it was Judah who suggested selling Joseph. Now he offers himself as a slave in Benjamin’s place, demonstrating his transformation and willingness to make a self-sacrifice.

The one in charge of Joseph’s house (verses 1, 4) was a high-ranking servant with considerable authority. Egyptian texts confirm that such stewards held great power and could act on their master’s behalf in legal and economic matters.

Events and Customs

The divination cup (גָּבִיעַ, gavia) mentioned in verses 2, 5, and 12 reflects a widespread practice in antiquity known as lecanomancy—divination using liquid in a cup. The method involved observing patterns of oil on water or reflections in the liquid. This practice is well documented in Mesopotamian and Egyptian sources. Whether Joseph actually practiced this or merely pretended to maintain his Egyptian role remains unclear in the text.

Tearing one’s garments (verse 13) was an established expression of grief and despair in the ancient Near East. This custom is also seen elsewhere in Genesis, such as when Jacob mourned for Joseph (37:34).

Key Terms

The Hebrew expression נַחֵשׁ יְנַחֵשׁ (nachesh yenachesh, verses 5, 15) means "he divines" or "he practices augury." The root נחש is associated with seeking hidden knowledge through magical means. In an Egyptian context, such practices were accepted and widespread.

עָרַב (arav, verse 32) means "to stand as a guarantor" or "to guarantee." Judah’s guarantee for Benjamin represents a legally binding obligation well known in ancient Near Eastern law.
