When David's time to die drew near, he charged his son Solomon:

"I am going the way of all the earth. Be strong, and show yourself a man.

Keep the charge of the LORD your God: walk in his ways, and keep his statutes, his commandments, his ordinances, and his testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, so that you may prosper in everything you do and everywhere you turn.

Do this so that the LORD may fulfill the promise he made concerning me: 'If your sons watch their way and walk faithfully before me with all their heart and with all their soul, you will never lack a man on the throne of Israel.'

You also know what Joab son of Zeruiah did to me—what he did to the two commanders of Israel's armies, Abner son of Ner and Amasa son of Jether. He killed them, shedding the blood of war in a time of peace, and he put the blood of war on the belt around his waist and on the sandals on his feet.

Act with the wisdom you have, and do not let his gray head go down to the grave in peace.

But show kindness to the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be among those who eat at your table, for they stood by me when I fled from your brother Absalom.

And there is with you Shimei son of Gera, the Benjaminite from Bahurim. He cursed me with a bitter curse the day I went to Mahanaim. But when he came down to meet me at the Jordan, I swore to him by the LORD, 'I will not put you to death by the sword.'

Now do not let him go unpunished. You are a wise man; you will know what to do to him. Bring his gray head down to the grave in blood."

Then David slept with his fathers and was buried in the City of David.

David reigned over Israel forty years: seven years in Hebron and thirty-three years in Jerusalem.

So Solomon sat on the throne of his father David, and his kingdom was firmly established.

Now Adonijah son of Haggith came to Bathsheba, Solomon's mother. She asked, "Do you come in peace?" "In peace," he said.

Then he added, "I have something to say to you." "Speak," she said.

He said, "You know that the kingdom was mine, and that all Israel looked to me as king. But the kingdom has turned about and gone to my brother, for it came to him from the LORD.

Now I have one request to make of you; do not refuse me." "Speak," she said.

He said, "Please ask King Solomon—he will not refuse you—to give me Abishag the Shunammite as my wife."

"Very well," Bathsheba said, "I will speak to the king for you."

So Bathsheba went to King Solomon to speak to him for Adonijah. The king rose to meet her and bowed to her; then he sat down on his throne and had a throne brought for the king's mother, and she sat at his right hand.

She said, "I have one small request to make of you; do not refuse me." The king answered, "Ask, my mother; I will not refuse you."

So she said, "Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to your brother Adonijah as his wife."

King Solomon answered his mother, "And why do you ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? Ask the kingdom for him as well—he is my older brother—yes, for him, and for Abiathar the priest, and for Joab son of Zeruiah!"

Then King Solomon swore by the LORD: "May God do so to me and more also, if Adonijah has not spoken this word at the cost of his life!

Now therefore, as the LORD lives, who has established me and seated me on the throne of my father David and who has made me a house as he promised—today Adonijah shall be put to death!"

So King Solomon sent Benaiah son of Jehoiada, who struck Adonijah down, and he died.

To Abiathar the priest the king said, "Go to Anathoth, to your own fields. You deserve to die, but I will not put you to death now, because you carried the ark of the Lord GOD before my father David and shared in all my father's hardships."

So Solomon removed Abiathar from serving as priest to the LORD, fulfilling the word the LORD had spoken at Shiloh concerning the house of Eli.

When the news reached Joab—who had sided with Adonijah, though he had not sided with Absalom—he fled to the tent of the LORD and took hold of the horns of the altar.

King Solomon was told that Joab had fled to the tent of the LORD and was there beside the altar. So Solomon sent Benaiah son of Jehoiada with the order, "Go, strike him down."

Benaiah came to the tent of the LORD and said to Joab, "The king says, 'Come out!'" But he answered, "No, I will die here." Benaiah brought word back to the king: "This is what Joab said, and this is how he answered me."

The king said to him, "Do as he says. Strike him down and bury him, and so remove from me and from my father's house the innocent blood that Joab shed.

The LORD will bring Joab's blood back on his own head, because he struck down two men more righteous and better than himself and killed them with the sword, without my father David's knowledge: Abner son of Ner, commander of Israel's army, and Amasa son of Jether, commander of Judah's army.

Their blood will come back on the head of Joab and on the head of his descendants forever; but for David and his descendants, his house and his throne, there will be peace from the LORD forevermore."

So Benaiah son of Jehoiada went up, struck Joab down, and put him to death; and he was buried at his own house in the wilderness.

The king put Benaiah son of Jehoiada over the army in his place, and he put Zadok the priest in the place of Abiathar.

Then the king summoned Shimei and said to him, "Build yourself a house in Jerusalem and live there; do not go out from there to anywhere at all.

On the day you leave and cross the Kidron Valley, know for certain that you will die; your blood will be on your own head."

Shimei answered the king, "The sentence is fair. As my lord the king has said, so your servant will do." And Shimei lived in Jerusalem a long time.

But at the end of three years, two of Shimei's slaves ran away to Achish son of Maacah, king of Gath, and Shimei was told, "Your slaves are in Gath."

So Shimei got up, saddled his donkey, and went to Achish at Gath to look for his slaves; he went and brought them back from Gath.

When Solomon was told that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath and returned,

the king summoned Shimei and said to him, "Did I not make you swear by the LORD and warn you, 'On the day you leave and go anywhere at all, know for certain that you will die'? And you said to me, 'The sentence is fair; I will obey.'

Why then have you not kept your oath to the LORD and the command I laid on you?"

The king also said to Shimei, "You know—your own heart knows—all the evil you did to my father David. So the LORD will bring your evil back on your own head.

But King Solomon will be blessed, and David's throne will be established before the LORD forever."

Then the king gave the order to Benaiah son of Jehoiada, who went out and struck Shimei down, and he died. So the kingdom was firmly established in Solomon's hand.

Solomon consolidates his power through this chapter. His treatment of Adonijah, Joab, and Shimei demonstrates political shrewdness, but also the brutal reality of ancient successions. By honoring his mother Bathsheba by rising to give her a seat at his right hand, he shows the high status the queen mother (גְּבִירָה, gevirah) held at court.

Joab, David's commander and nephew, had killed both Abner and Amasa—actions that David himself had not punished during his lifetime. His execution at the altar demonstrates that sanctuary in the holy place was not absolute when it came to intentional murder.

Abiathar belonged to the line of Eli from Shiloh and had served David faithfully. His removal and exile to Anatot (a priestly town north of Jerusalem) fulfill the prophecy against the house of Eli found in 1 Samuel 2–3.

Places

The City of David (עִיר דָּוִד, ir David) refers to the oldest part of Jerusalem on the Ophel hill, south of the temple area. Here David was buried (v. 10).

Anatot, where Abiathar was exiled, lay about 5 km north of Jerusalem. The site is usually identified with the village of Anata. It was the hometown of the prophet Jeremiah several hundred years later.

Gath, to which Shimei's servants fled, was one of the five Philistine city-states. King Achish (אָכִישׁ בֶּן־מַעֲכָה, Akhish ben Ma'akha) mentioned here may be the same person or a descendant of the king David knew (1 Sam 27).

Events and Customs

The Altar as Refuge: When Joab seized the horns of the altar (קַרְנוֹת הַמִּזְבֵּחַ, qarnot ha-mizbeach), he sought sanctuary—a known practice in the ancient Near East. However, according to Exodus 21:14, this protection did not apply to intentional murder, which Solomon invokes.

The King's Harem and Power Politics: Adonijah's request for Abishag was not merely a romantic desire. In the ancient Near East, taking over a predecessor's concubines signaled a claim to the throne. Absalom had done something similar (2 Sam 16:21–22). Solomon therefore immediately perceived the political dimension.

Bloodguilt and Cleansing: David's instructions regarding Joab use the phrase "innocent blood" (דְּמֵי חִנָּם, deme chinnam). The idea was that unpunished bloodguilt polluted the land and the dynasty. By punishing Joab, this guilt was removed from David's house.

Key Terms

"Go the way all the earth goes" (בְּדֶרֶךְ כָּל־הָאָרֶץ, bederekh kol-ha'arets) is a euphemism for death, also used by Joshua (Josh 23:14). The expression reflects the common human destiny.

"Do not let his gray hair go down to Sheol in peace" (שְׁאֹל, she'ol) – Sheol denotes the realm of the dead or the dwelling place of the deceased in Old Testament thought. The phrase "gray hair" (שֵׂיבָה, sevah) represents old age and honor; sending someone there "in blood" means a violent death.
