When Rehoboam's rule was firmly established and he had grown strong, he abandoned the law of the LORD, and all Israel with him.

In the fifth year of King Rehoboam, Shishak king of Egypt marched against Jerusalem, because they had been unfaithful to the LORD.

He came with twelve hundred chariots and sixty thousand horsemen, and troops beyond counting who came with him from Egypt: Libyans, Sukkites, and Cushites.

He captured the fortified cities of Judah and advanced as far as Jerusalem.

Then Shemaiah the prophet came to Rehoboam and to the officials of Judah who had gathered in Jerusalem because of Shishak, and he said to them, "This is what the LORD says: You have abandoned me, so I in turn have abandoned you to the hand of Shishak."

Then the officials of Israel and the king humbled themselves and said, "The LORD is righteous."

When the LORD saw that they had humbled themselves, the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah: "They have humbled themselves; I will not destroy them. I will grant them a measure of deliverance, and my wrath will not be poured out on Jerusalem through Shishak.

Yet they will become his servants, so that they may learn the difference between serving me and serving the kingdoms of other lands."

So Shishak king of Egypt marched against Jerusalem and carried off the treasures of the house of the LORD and the treasures of the royal palace. He took everything, including the gold shields that Solomon had made.

King Rehoboam made bronze shields to replace them and entrusted them to the officers of the guard who kept watch at the entrance of the royal palace.

Whenever the king went to the house of the LORD, the guards would carry the shields, and afterward they would return them to the guardroom.

Because he humbled himself, the LORD's anger turned away from him, and he was not destroyed completely. Indeed, there was still some good in Judah.

King Rehoboam established himself firmly in Jerusalem and continued to reign. He was forty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city the LORD had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel in which to put his name. His mother's name was Naamah the Ammonite.

He did what was evil, for he did not set his heart to seek the LORD.

The events of Rehoboam's reign, from beginning to end, are they not written in the records of Shemaiah the prophet and of Iddo the seer, along with the genealogies? There was continual warfare between Rehoboam and Jeroboam.

Rehoboam rested with his fathers and was buried in the City of David, and his son Abijah succeeded him as king.

People

Shishak (Shoshenq I) is one of the best-documented biblical figures in Egyptian archaeology. He was the founder of Egypt’s 22nd dynasty and reigned approximately 943–922 B.C.E. His campaign against Judah and Israel is confirmed by the so-called "Sheshonq inscription" on the temple wall at Karnak, Egypt, where he lists over 150 conquered cities in Canaan. Interestingly, the inscription mentions more cities in the northern kingdom of Israel than in Judah, suggesting that the campaign was more extensive than described in Chronicles.

Shemaiah the prophet appears as God’s spokesperson in this chapter (vv. 5–8). He is the same prophet who earlier warned Rehoboam against attacking the northern kingdom (2 Chron 11:2–4). Verse 15 notes that his prophetic writings were used as a historical source, showing that prophets served as contemporary historians in ancient Israel.

Places

The fortified cities of Judah (v. 4) likely refer to the fortifications Rehoboam built according to chapter 11:5–12. The Sheshonq inscription at Karnak confirms the destruction of several cities in this region. Archaeological excavations at sites such as Lachish and Arad have uncovered destruction layers that can be dated to this period.

Events and Customs

The gold shields replaced with bronze shields (vv. 9–11) illustrate a dramatic decline in royal splendor. Solomon’s gold shields (1 Kings 10:16–17; 2 Chron 9:15–16) were ceremonial objects symbolizing the kingdom’s wealth. That Rehoboam replaced them with bronze (or copper) shows both material loss and symbolic decline from Solomon’s golden age. The custom of bodyguards carrying the shields when the king went to the temple, then returning them to the guardroom, reflects the strict security regime surrounding royal ceremonies.

Tribute and vassal status (v. 8) reflect a common practice in the ancient Near East. The phrasing "they shall become his servants" suggests that Judah became a vassal state under Egypt, involving regular tribute payments and political subordination.

Chapter-Specific Findings

The Sheshonq relief at Karnak is the most important archaeological find related to this chapter. The relief shows Pharaoh Shoshenq I striking down captives before the god Amun, with a list of conquered cities. Among the city names are likely Megiddo, where a fragment of a stele bearing Sheshonq’s name was actually found. This provides strong extra-biblical confirmation of the campaign described in 2 Chronicles 12.

Chronological note: The dating "in the fifth year" (v. 2) places the invasion around 926–925 B.C.E. Egyptian sources date the campaign to Shoshenq’s reign, and the Karnak inscription confirms the scope of the campaign.
