Jehoshaphat had great riches and honor, and he allied himself with Ahab by marriage.

Some years later he went down to visit Ahab in Samaria, and Ahab slaughtered sheep and cattle in abundance for him and for the people who were with him, and he urged him to march against Ramoth-gilead.

Ahab king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat king of Judah, "Will you go with me to Ramoth-gilead?" He answered him, "I am as you are, and my people as your people; we will join you in the battle."

But Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, "Please seek the word of the LORD first."

So the king of Israel gathered the prophets, four hundred men, and asked them, "Shall we go to war against Ramoth-gilead, or shall I hold back?" They said, "Go up, and God will give it into the king's hand."

But Jehoshaphat said, "Is there no other prophet of the LORD here, that we may inquire of him?"

The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, "There is still one man through whom we may inquire of the LORD, but I hate him, because he never prophesies anything good about me, only trouble, all his days. He is Micaiah son of Imlah." Jehoshaphat said, "The king should not say such a thing."

So the king of Israel summoned one of his officers and said, "Bring Micaiah son of Imlah at once."

Now the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah were sitting on their thrones, dressed in their robes, at the threshing floor by the entrance of the gate of Samaria, with all the prophets prophesying before them.

Zedekiah son of Chenaanah had made himself horns of iron, and he declared, "Thus says the LORD: With these you shall gore the Arameans until they are destroyed."

And all the prophets prophesied the same thing: "March up to Ramoth-gilead and triumph; the LORD will give it into the king's hand."

The messenger who had gone to summon Micaiah said to him, "Listen, the prophets are unanimous in speaking favorably to the king. Let your word be like theirs; speak favorably."

But Micaiah said, "As the LORD lives, I will speak whatever my God tells me."

When he came to the king, the king said to him, "Micaiah, shall we go to war against Ramoth-gilead, or shall I hold back?" He answered, "Go up and triumph! They will be given into your hand."

The king said to him, "How many times must I make you swear to tell me nothing but the truth in the name of the LORD?"

Then Micaiah said, "I saw all Israel scattered on the mountains, like sheep without a shepherd. And the LORD said, 'These have no master; let each one go home in peace.'"

The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, "Didn't I tell you? He never prophesies anything good about me, only trouble."

Micaiah went on, "Therefore hear the word of the LORD: I saw the LORD seated on his throne, with all the host of heaven standing on his right and on his left.

And the LORD said, 'Who will entice Ahab king of Israel to march up and fall at Ramoth-gilead?' One said this, another said that,

until a spirit came forward and stood before the LORD and said, 'I will entice him.' The LORD asked him, 'How?'

He answered, 'I will go out and be a lying spirit in the mouths of all his prophets.' The LORD said, 'You will entice him, and you will succeed. Go and do it.'

So now the LORD has put a lying spirit in the mouths of these prophets of yours; the LORD has decreed disaster for you."

Then Zedekiah son of Chenaanah came up and struck Micaiah on the cheek, saying, "Which way did the Spirit of the LORD go when he left me to speak to you?"

Micaiah answered, "You will find out on the day you go into an inner room to hide."

The king of Israel ordered, "Take Micaiah and hand him over to Amon the governor of the city and to Joash the king's son,

and say, 'Thus says the king: Put this man in prison and feed him a meager ration of bread and water until I return safely.'"

Micaiah said, "If you ever return safely, the LORD has not spoken through me." And he added, "Hear it, all you peoples!"

So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah marched up to Ramoth-gilead.

The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, "I will disguise myself and go into battle, but you wear your royal robes." So the king of Israel disguised himself, and they went into battle.

Now the king of Aram had ordered his chariot commanders, "Do not fight with anyone, small or great, except the king of Israel."

When the chariot commanders saw Jehoshaphat, they said, "That is the king of Israel," and they turned to attack him. But Jehoshaphat cried out, and the LORD helped him; God drew them away from him.

For when the chariot commanders saw that he was not the king of Israel, they turned back from pursuing him.

But someone drew his bow at random and struck the king of Israel between the joints of his armor. The king said to his charioteer, "Turn around and get me out of the battle, for I am wounded."

The fighting raged all that day, and the king of Israel was propped up in his chariot facing the Arameans until evening. At sunset he died.

Ahab (אַחְאָב) was king of the northern kingdom of Israel. In this chapter, he invites Jehoshaphat to a military alliance against Aram and gathers 400 prophets who give him the message he wants. His disguise in battle (verse 29) shows his attempt to avoid Micaiah’s judgment, yet he is struck by a random arrow and dies at sunset (verses 33–34).

Jehoshaphat (יְהוֹשָׁפָ֛ט, "the Lord judges") was king of Judah. The marriage alliance mentioned in verse 1 (וַיִּתְחַתֵּ֖ן) established family ties between the two royal houses. Jehoshaphat shows spiritual awareness by asking for a prophet of the Lord (verse 6), yet he still joins the war. God rescued him when the Arameans mistakenly attacked him (verse 31).

Micaiah son of Imlah (מִיכָ֣יְהוּ בֶן־יִמְלָ֑א) was a true prophet of Yahweh who stood in sharp contrast to the court prophets. Ahab hated him because he "never prophesies anything good about me" (verse 7). Micaiah delivered a vision of Israel’s defeat (verse 16) and of the heavenly council where a spirit of deception was sent (verses 18–22).

Zedekiah son of Kenaanah (צִדְקִיָּ֥הוּ בֶֽן־כְּנַעֲנָ֖ה) led the group of 400 prophets and used symbolic prophetic action with iron horns (verse 10). He struck Micaiah on the cheek and challenged his authority (verse 23).

The 400 prophets (אַרְבַּ֣ע מֵא֣וֹת אִישׁ, verse 5) were court prophets who unanimously gave Ahab the message he wanted to hear. Their unanimous positive message (verse 11) stands in contrast to Micaiah’s true prophecy.

Amon (אָמ֣וֹן) was the city governor (שַׂר־הָעִ֑יר), and Jehoshaphat (יוֹאָ֖שׁ) was the king’s son (verse 25). They were given responsibility to keep Micaiah imprisoned on reduced rations until Ahab’s planned return.

Places

Ramoth-Gilead (רָמֹ֥ת גִּלְעָֽד) was a strategic city in Transjordan that at this time was under Aramean control. Ahab wanted to recapture the city, and this became the goal of the joint military campaign (verses 2–3, 28). It was here that Ahab was mortally wounded (verses 33–34).

Samaria (שֹׁמְר֑וֹן) was the capital of the northern kingdom, where Jehoshaphat visited Ahab (verse 2) and where the kings held a public council at the city gate (verse 9).

Events and Customs

The threshing floor at the city gate (verse 9) was a typical place for public assemblies and legal decisions in ancient Israel. The fact that the kings sat there "on their thrones, dressed in royal robes" (מְלֻבָּשִׁ֤ים בְּגָדִים֙) emphasizes the formal and public nature of the council.

Prophetic symbolic action is seen when Zedekiah makes iron horns (verse 10). This was a common prophetic practice in which physical objects illustrated the message. Horns symbolized strength and military power, and the iron emphasized invincibility.

Disguise in battle (verse 29) was a known military strategy. Ahab’s attempt to avoid the prophecy by disguising himself reflects the belief that prophecies could be manipulated, while the text shows that God’s will was fulfilled anyway through a "random" arrow (verse 33).

Key Terms

The expression רוּחַ שֶׁקֶר ("a spirit of deception," verses 21–22) raises theological questions about God’s relationship to deceit. The text presents a heavenly vision in which God allows a spirit to mislead the prophets—this shows that even false prophecy stands under God’s sovereign control, not that God Himself lies.

The verb הִתְחַפֵּשׂ ("to disguise oneself," verse 29) is also used of Saul before his meeting with the medium (1 Sam 28:8), and in both cases suggests an attempt to escape God’s judgment.
