There is an evil I have seen under the sun, and it lies heavy upon humankind:
a man to whom God gives wealth, possessions, and honor, so that he lacks nothing his soul desires—yet God does not let him enjoy it, and a stranger consumes it instead. This is meaningless, a grievous affliction.
A man may father a hundred children and live many years; yet however long his days may be, if his soul is not satisfied with good and he receives no burial, then I say the stillborn child is better off than he.
For it comes in emptiness and departs in darkness, and in darkness its name is covered over.
It never saw the sun, never knew a thing—yet it has more rest than he does.
Even if he lived a thousand years twice over but never enjoyed the good—do not all go to the same place?
All a person's toil is for his mouth, and still the appetite is never filled.
What advantage, then, has the wise over the fool? What does the poor man gain by knowing how to conduct himself before the living?
Better what the eyes can see than the wandering of desire. This too is meaningless, a chasing after wind.
Whatever has come to be was named long ago, and it is known that he is only a man: he cannot contend with one stronger than himself.
For there are many words, and they multiply emptiness—so what advantage is there for anyone?
For who knows what is good for a person in life, through the numbered days of his fleeting life, which he spends like a shadow? And who can tell anyone what will come after him under the sun?
