Show the two waysThe righteous and the wicked

Psalm 1 opens the Book of Psalms with a fundamental choice: two paths to walk, two destinies to face. The one who follows the Lord stands in contrast to the one who follows the wicked.

The Wicked

v.1-4-5-6
  • Walks by the counsel of the wicked
  • Stands in the way of sinners
  • Sits in the seat of mockers
  • Like chaff that the wind drives away
  • Will not stand in the judgment
  • The way leads to destruction

The Righteous

v.2-3-6
  • Delights in the law of the Lord
  • Meditates on his law day and night
  • Like a tree planted by streams of water
  • Produces fruit in its season
  • Its leaves do not wither
  • The Lord knows the way of the righteous

The Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish. (v.6)

Blessed is the one who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, who does not stand in the way of sinners, who does not sit in the seat of mockers,
but whose delight is in the instruction of the LORD, and who murmurs over his instruction day and night.
He is like a tree transplanted beside channels of water, yielding its fruit in season, its leaf never withering; in all that he does, he thrives.
Not so the wicked. They are like chaff that the wind blows away.
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
For the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
