Jesus drives out demons and is accused of doing so by Beelzebul (Luke 11:14-28, Matt 12:22-30). Jesus answers: "If it is by the finger of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you." The parable of the strong man who is bound by a stronger one. "Whoever is not with me is against me."

Betydning

God's kingdom breaks in as a confrontation with evil—not peaceful coexistence, but battle. Jesus reveals himself as the stronger one who binds Satan. There is no neutral option: "Whoever is not with me is against me." Lent is a time to choose sides and make room for God's kingdom.

Historie

Exorcism and demonology were central themes in the early church's catechesis during Lent, as baptismal candidates were prepared to renounce the devil in baptism. This Sunday bears the mark of that pedagogy.
