At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry, and they began to pick heads of grain and eat them.
When the Pharisees saw it, they said to him, "Look, your disciples are doing what is not permitted on the Sabbath."
He said to them, "Haven't you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?
How he entered the house of God, and they ate the bread of the Presence, which was not lawful for him or his companions to eat, but only for the priests.
Or haven't you read in the Law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple break the Sabbath and are not guilty?
But I tell you, something greater than the temple is here.
If you had known what this means—'I desire mercy, not sacrifice'—you would not have condemned the innocent.
Moving on from there, he went into their synagogue,
and there was a man with a withered hand. Looking for a way to accuse him, they asked, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?"
He said to them, "Suppose one of you has a single sheep, and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath. Won't he take hold of it and lift it out?
How much more valuable is a person than a sheep! So it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath."
Then he said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He stretched it out, and it was restored, as sound as the other.
But the Pharisees went out and took counsel against him, how they might destroy him.
Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from there. Many followed him, and he healed them all,
warning them not to make him known.
This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:
"Here is my servant, whom I have chosen, my beloved, in whom my soul delights. I will put my Spirit on him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations.
He will not quarrel or cry out, and no one will hear his voice in the streets.
A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out, until he brings justice to victory.
And in his name the nations will hope."
Then a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute was brought to him, and he healed him, so that the man could speak and see.
But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, "This man drives out demons only by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons."
Knowing their thoughts, he said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or household divided against itself will stand.
And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your own people drive them out? So they will be your judges.
But if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
Or how can anyone enter a strong man's house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can plunder his house.
So I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.
Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.
Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree rotten and its fruit rotten; for a tree is known by its fruit.
You brood of vipers! How can you say anything good when you are evil? For the mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart.
The good person brings good things out of a good treasure, and the evil person brings evil things out of an evil treasure.
He answered them, "An evil and adulterous generation demands a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.
For as Jonah was in the belly of the great fish three days and three nights, so the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights.
The men of Nineveh will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at Jonah's preaching—and look, something greater than Jonah is here.
The queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon—and look, something greater than Solomon is here.
When an unclean spirit comes out of a person, it wanders through waterless places looking for rest and finds none.
Then it says, 'I will return to the house I left.' And when it arrives, it finds the place empty, swept clean, and put in order.
Then it goes and brings back with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they move in and settle there. And the last state of that person is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this evil generation."
While he was still speaking to the crowds, his mother and brothers were standing outside, wanting to speak with him.
Someone said to him, "Look, your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak with you."
But he answered the one who told him, "Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?"
