Now I myself, Paul, appeal to you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ—I who am humble when face to face with you, but bold toward you when away.
I beg you that when I am present I may not have to be bold with the confidence I expect to show against some who consider us to be walking according to the flesh.
For though we walk in the flesh, we do not wage war according to the flesh.
The weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but have divine power to demolish strongholds. We tear down arguments
and every high thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we take every thought captive to obey Christ.
And we are ready to punish every act of disobedience, once your obedience is complete.
Look at what is right in front of you. If anyone is confident that he belongs to Christ, let him remind himself that just as he belongs to Christ, so do we.
For even if I boast a little too much about the authority the Lord gave us—for building you up, not for tearing you down—I will not be put to shame.
I do not want to seem as if I were trying to frighten you with my letters.
For someone says, "His letters are weighty and forceful, but in person he is unimpressive, and his speaking amounts to nothing."
Let such a person understand this: what we are in word by letter when absent, we will be in deed when present.
For we do not dare to rank or compare ourselves with certain people who commend themselves. But when they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they show no understanding.
We, however, will not boast beyond limits, but will keep to the measure of the field God has assigned us—a measure that reaches even to you.
We are not overextending ourselves, as if we had not reached you; we did in fact come all the way to you with the gospel of Christ.
Nor do we boast beyond limits in the labors of others. Our hope is that, as your faith grows, our sphere of work among you may be greatly enlarged,
so that we may preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, without boasting of work already done in someone else's territory.
But "let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord."
For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.
