I have to boast. It gains nothing, but I will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord.

I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know; God knows.

And I know that this man—whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know; God knows—

was caught up into paradise and heard inexpressible words, things no one is permitted to speak.

About such a man I will boast, but about myself I will not boast, except in my weaknesses.

Even if I did want to boast, I would not be a fool, for I would be speaking the truth. But I hold back, so that no one will think of me beyond what he sees in me or hears from me.

And to keep me from becoming conceited over the surpassing greatness of these revelations, I was given a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me—so that I would not become conceited.

Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it would leave me.

But he said to me, "My grace is enough for you, for my power is brought to its fullness in weakness." So I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

That is why I am content with weaknesses, with insults, with hardships, with persecutions and distresses for the sake of Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

I have become a fool. You forced me to it. It was you who should have commended me, for I am in no way inferior to those "super-apostles," even though I am nothing.

The marks of a true apostle were performed among you with all endurance—signs, wonders, and mighty works.

How were you worse off than the other churches, except that I did not burden you? Forgive me this wrong!

Look, I am ready to come to you a third time, and I will not be a burden. I am not looking for what is yours, but for you. Children ought not to save up for their parents, but parents for their children.

I will most gladly spend all I have, and be spent myself, for your souls. If I love you more, am I to be loved less?

Granted, I was no burden to you—yet, crafty fellow that I am, I caught you by deceit!

Did I exploit you through any of the men I sent to you?

I urged Titus to go, and I sent our brother with him. Did Titus exploit you? Did we not walk in the same Spirit and in the same footsteps?

Have you been thinking all along that we are defending ourselves to you? We speak in Christ before God, and everything we do, dear friends, is for building you up.

For I am afraid that when I come I may not find you as I wish, and you may not find me as you wish. I am afraid there may be quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, slander, gossip, arrogance, and disorder.

I am afraid that when I come again my God will humble me before you, and that I will grieve over many who sinned earlier and have not repented of the impurity, sexual immorality, and debauchery they practiced.
