When Rehoboam came to Jerusalem, he mustered the house of Judah and Benjamin—a hundred and eighty thousand picked troops—to fight against Israel and win the kingdom back for himself.

But the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah, the man of God:

"Say to Rehoboam son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin:

Thus says the LORD: You shall not march out and fight against your brothers. Every one of you, go home, for this thing is from me." So they listened to the words of the LORD and turned back from marching against Jeroboam.

Rehoboam settled in Jerusalem and built up cities for defense in Judah.

He built Bethlehem, Etam, Tekoa,

Beth Zur, Soco, Adullam,

Gath, Mareshah, Ziph,

Adoraim, Lachish, Azekah,

Zorah, Aijalon, and Hebron—fortified cities in Judah and Benjamin.

He strengthened the fortresses, appointed commanders over them, and stocked them with stores of food, oil, and wine.

In every city he placed shields and spears, making the cities exceedingly strong. So Judah and Benjamin were his.

The priests and Levites from all their districts throughout Israel sided with him,

for the Levites left their pasturelands and their holdings and came to Judah and Jerusalem, because Jeroboam and his sons had rejected them from serving as priests of the LORD.

Jeroboam appointed his own priests for the high places, for the goat idols, and for the calves he had made.

And those from every tribe of Israel who set their hearts on seeking the LORD, the God of Israel, followed the Levites to Jerusalem to sacrifice to the LORD, the God of their fathers.

So they strengthened the kingdom of Judah and supported Rehoboam son of Solomon for three years, for during those three years they walked in the way of David and Solomon.

Rehoboam took as his wife Mahalath, the daughter of Jerimoth son of David, whose mother was Abihail, the daughter of Eliab son of Jesse.

She bore him sons: Jeush, Shemariah, and Zaham.

After her he took Maacah, the daughter of Absalom, and she bore him Abijah, Attai, Ziza, and Shelomith.

Rehoboam loved Maacah, the daughter of Absalom, more than all his other wives and concubines; he had eighteen wives and sixty concubines, and he fathered twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters.

Rehoboam appointed Abijah son of Maacah as chief prince among his brothers, intending to make him king.

He acted wisely, dispersing his sons throughout all the territories of Judah and Benjamin, to all the fortified cities, and he gave them abundant provisions and sought many wives for them.

Rehoboam (רְחַבְעָם, "the people have expanded") was the son of Solomon and Naamah the Ammonite. As king over the now-reduced kingdom of Judah, he faced the enormous challenge of stabilizing a divided monarchy. His marriages to Mahalath, David's great-granddaughter through Jerimoth, and especially to Maacah, daughter (or granddaughter) of Absalom, reveal a deliberate strategy to strengthen his legitimacy through ties to the Davidic dynasty.

Shemaiah (שְׁמַעְיָהוּ, "the Lord has heard") is described as "a man of God" (אִישׁ־הָאֱלֹהִים), a title denoting a prophet with special authority. His prophetic intervention prevented civil war between Judah and Israel (verses 1–4).

Places

The chapter mentions fifteen fortified cities that Rehoboam built up (verses 6–10).
