In the spring of the year, at the time when kings march out to war, David sent Joab out with his servants and all Israel, and they ravaged the Ammonites and laid siege to Rabbah. But David stayed behind in Jerusalem.

One evening David got up from his bed and walked about on the roof of the king's house. From the roof he saw a woman bathing, and the woman was very beautiful.

David sent someone to inquire about her, and he was told, "That is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite."

So David sent messengers and had her brought to him, and he slept with her—she had just purified herself from her uncleanness—and then she returned to her house.

The woman conceived, and she sent word to David: "I am pregnant."

Then David sent word to Joab: "Send me Uriah the Hittite." And Joab sent Uriah to David.

When Uriah came to him, David asked how Joab was, how the troops were, and how the war was going.

Then David said to Uriah, "Go down to your house and wash your feet." So Uriah left the king's house, and a gift from the king was sent after him.

But Uriah slept at the entrance of the king's house with all his master's servants and did not go down to his own house.

When David was told, "Uriah did not go down to his house," he said to Uriah, "Haven't you just come from a journey? Why didn't you go down to your house?"

Uriah answered David, "The ark and Israel and Judah are staying in shelters, and my lord Joab and my lord's servants are camped in the open field. Should I then go to my house to eat and drink and sleep with my wife? As you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do such a thing."

So David said to Uriah, "Stay here today as well, and tomorrow I will send you back." So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day and the next.

David invited him to eat and drink in his presence, and he got him drunk. But in the evening Uriah went out to lie down on his bed among his master's servants; he did not go down to his own house.

In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it with Uriah.

In the letter he wrote: "Put Uriah at the front, where the fighting is fiercest, then pull back from him so that he is struck down and dies."

So as Joab kept watch on the city, he stationed Uriah at the place where he knew the strongest defenders were.

The men of the city came out and fought against Joab, and some of the troops, David's own servants, fell. Uriah the Hittite also died.

Then Joab sent David a full report of the battle.

He instructed the messenger: "When you have finished giving the king the whole account of the battle,

if the king's anger flares up and he asks you, 'Why did you go so close to the city to fight? Didn't you know they would shoot from the wall?

Who struck down Abimelech son of Jerubbesheth? Wasn't it a woman who threw an upper millstone down on him from the wall, so that he died at Thebez? Why did you go so near the wall?'—then say, 'Your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead as well.'"

The messenger set out, and when he arrived he told David everything Joab had sent him to say.

The messenger said to David, "The men prevailed against us and came out at us into the open field, but we drove them back to the entrance of the gate.

Then the archers shot at your servants from the wall, and some of the king's servants died. Your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead as well."

David said to the messenger, "Tell Joab this: 'Do not let this matter trouble you, for the sword devours now one and now another. Press your attack on the city and tear it down.' And encourage him."

When Uriah's wife heard that her husband Uriah was dead, she mourned for him.

When the mourning was over, David sent for her and brought her into his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But what David had done was evil in the eyes of the LORD.

Eliam was likely one of David's "thirty mighty men" (2 Sam 23:34), which places Bathsheba within the circle of the military elite. She was therefore not a stranger, but belonged to a family David knew well.

Uriah the Hittite (אוּרִיָּה הַחִתִּי) bears an Israelite theophoric name meaning "YHWH is my light," yet he is called "the Hittite." This indicates either Hittite origin or affiliation with the Hittite population that still lived in Canaan. Uriah is counted among David's "thirty mighty men" (2 Sam 23:39). Despite his non-Israelite background, he demonstrates exemplary loyalty to the covenant and the army—a sharp contrast to David's behavior.
