Then David rose and went, and Jonathan went back into the city.

David came to Nob, to Ahimelech the priest. Ahimelech came trembling to meet him and asked, "Why are you alone? Why is no one with you?"

David answered Ahimelech the priest, "The king has given me a commission and told me, 'No one is to know anything about the mission I am sending you on, or about my orders.' As for my men, I have arranged to meet them at a certain place.

Now then, what do you have on hand? Give me five loaves of bread, or whatever you can find."

The priest answered David, "I have no ordinary bread on hand—only holy bread, provided the men have kept themselves from women."

David answered the priest, "Truly, women have been kept from us, as always when I set out. The men's gear is holy even on an ordinary journey; how much more today will it be holy!"

So the priest gave him the holy bread, since there was none there but the bread of the Presence, which had been removed from before the LORD and replaced with fresh, warm bread on the day it was taken away.

Now one of Saul's servants was there that day, detained before the LORD. His name was Doeg the Edomite, the chief of Saul's shepherds.

David asked Ahimelech, "Do you have a spear or a sword here on hand? I brought neither my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king's business was urgent."

The priest said, "The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you struck down in the Valley of Elah, is here, wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. Take it, if you want it—there is no other here but that one." David said, "There is none like it. Give it to me."

That day David rose and fled from Saul, and he came to Achish king of Gath.

But the servants of Achish said to him, "Isn't this David, the king of the land? Isn't he the one they sang of in their dances: 'Saul has struck down his thousands, and David his ten thousands'?"

David took these words to heart and became very afraid of Achish king of Gath.

So he pretended to be out of his mind in their presence and acted like a madman among them, making marks on the doors of the gate and letting his spittle run down his beard.

Achish said to his servants, "Look at him—the man is insane! Why bring him to me?

Am I short of madmen, that you bring this one to rave in my presence? Is he to come into my house?"
