I saw the Lord standing beside the altar, and he said: Strike the capitals, so that the thresholds shake; shatter them on the heads of them all, and what is left of them I will kill with the sword. Not one of them shall flee away, not one of them shall escape.

Though they dig down to Sheol, from there my hand shall take them; though they climb up to heaven, from there I will bring them down.

Though they hide on the summit of Carmel, from there I will search them out and seize them; though they conceal themselves from my sight on the floor of the sea, from there I will command the serpent, and it shall bite them.

Though they go into captivity before their enemies, from there I will command the sword, and it shall kill them. I will fix my eyes on them for harm and not for good.

The Lord GOD of hosts—he touches the earth and it melts, and all who dwell in it mourn; all of it rises like the Nile and sinks again like the Nile of Egypt.

He builds his upper chambers in the heavens and founds his vault upon the earth; he calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out over the face of the earth—the LORD is his name.

Are you not like the Cushites to me, O people of Israel? declares the LORD. Did I not bring Israel up from the land of Egypt, and the Philistines from Caphtor and the Arameans from Kir?

Behold, the eyes of the Lord GOD are on the sinful kingdom, and I will wipe it from the face of the earth—except that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, declares the LORD.

For behold, I will give the command, and I will shake the house of Israel among all the nations as grain is shaken in a sieve, and not a pebble shall fall to the ground.

All the sinners of my people shall die by the sword, those who say, "Disaster will not overtake us or meet us."

On that day I will raise up the fallen booth of David; I will repair its breaches and raise up its ruins and rebuild it as in the days of old,

so that they may possess the remnant of Edom and all the nations that are called by my name, declares the LORD, who does this.

Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes shall overtake the one who sows the seed; the mountains shall drip sweet wine, and all the hills shall flow with it.

I will restore the fortunes of my people Israel; they shall rebuild the ruined cities and live in them, plant vineyards and drink their wine, make gardens and eat their fruit.

I will plant them on their own soil, and they shall never again be uprooted from the land I have given them, says the LORD your God.

Amos uses this location to illustrate that even the most inaccessible hiding places cannot protect against God’s judgment.

Caphtor (כַּפְתּוֹר, verse 7) is usually identified with Crete or the broader Aegean region. This was the original homeland of the Philistines according to several biblical texts. Kir (קִיר, verse 7) is mentioned as the homeland of the Arameans before their migration to Syria, though its exact location remains uncertain—possibly an area in Mesopotamia. By mentioning these places, Amos places Israel’s history of migration within a broader context of population movements in the ancient world.

The capital (הַכַּפְתּוֹר, verse 1) refers to the top or decorated head of a column in the sanctuary. Events and Customs

The vision in verses 1–4 describes a theophany at the altar, possibly the one in Bethel or the temple in Jerusalem. In ancient Near Eastern thought, the temple was a meeting point between heaven and earth, and the destruction of the sanctuary represented the ultimate catastrophe—the deity having abandoned the people. That God Himself commands this destruction turns the entire concept of the temple upside down.

The image of natural abundance in verses 13–14, where "the plowman overtakes the harvester," reflects a well-known Near Eastern idea of an ideal future. Similar images appear in Mesopotamian and Egyptian texts describing divine blessing. Vineyards and gardens were not only signs of prosperity but also symbols of permanent settlement and peace—the opposite of the exile that threatened them.
