The word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai:

"Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it, for their wickedness has risen up before me."

But Jonah got up to flee to Tarshish, away from the LORD. He went down to Joppa, found a ship bound for Tarshish, paid the fare, and boarded it to sail with them to Tarshish, away from the LORD.

Then the LORD hurled a great wind upon the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break apart.

The sailors were terrified, and each cried out to his own god. They threw the cargo overboard to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep.

The captain came to him and said, "How can you sleep? Get up and call on your god! Perhaps the god will take notice of us, and we will not perish."

Then the sailors said to one another, "Come, let us cast lots to find out who is to blame for this disaster." They cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

So they said to him, "Tell us, who is responsible for this trouble that has come upon us? What is your business? Where do you come from? What is your country, and from what people are you?"

He answered, "I am a Hebrew, and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land."

At this the men were seized with great fear and said to him, "What have you done?" For they knew he was fleeing from the LORD—he had told them so.

Then they asked him, "What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?" For the sea was growing wilder and wilder.

"Pick me up and throw me into the sea," he answered, "and the sea will grow calm for you. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you."

Instead, the men rowed hard to get back to land, but they could not, for the sea grew wilder and wilder against them.

Then they called out to the LORD: "Please, LORD, do not let us perish for taking this man's life. Do not hold us guilty of shedding innocent blood, for you, LORD, have done as you pleased."

Then they picked Jonah up and threw him into the sea, and the raging sea grew calm.

Then the men were filled with great fear of the LORD, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows to him.
