The oracle that Habakkuk the prophet saw.
How long, LORD, must I call for help and you not listen? I cry out to you, "Violence!" and you do not save.
Why do you make me see wrongdoing? Why do you look upon trouble? Destruction and violence are before me; strife breaks out and conflict rises up.
So the law goes numb, and justice never comes forth. The wicked hem in the righteous, and justice comes out twisted.
Look among the nations and watch. Be astonished, be astounded! For I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if it were told you.
Look, I am raising up the Chaldeans, that bitter and impetuous nation, who march across the breadth of the earth to seize dwellings not their own.
They are dreadful and terrifying; their justice and their dignity proceed from themselves.
Their horses are swifter than leopards, fiercer than wolves at dusk. Their horsemen come charging; their horsemen come from far away, swooping like an eagle rushing to devour.
They all come bent on violence, their faces set to press forward; they gather captives like sand.
They scoff at kings, and rulers are a laughingstock to them. They laugh at every fortress; they heap up earth and capture it.
Then they sweep past like the wind and move on—guilty men, whose own strength is their god.
Are you not from everlasting, LORD my God, my Holy One? We will not die. LORD, you have appointed them to execute judgment; you, O Rock, have established them to punish.
Your eyes are too pure to look on evil; you cannot gaze at wrongdoing. Why then do you look on the treacherous and stay silent when the wicked swallows one more righteous than himself?
You have made people like the fish of the sea, like crawling things that have no ruler.
The foe hauls them all up with a hook, drags them off in his net, gathers them in his dragnet—and so he rejoices and exults.
So he sacrifices to his net and burns incense to his dragnet, for by them his portion is rich and his food is choice.
Is he then to keep emptying his net, forever slaughtering nations without mercy?
