A good name is worth more than great riches; to be held in esteem is better than silver or gold.

Rich and poor meet together; the LORD is the maker of them all.

The prudent see danger and take cover, but the simple walk on and pay the price.

Humility and the fear of the LORD bring their reward: riches and honor and life.

Thorns and snares lie in the path of the crooked; whoever guards his life stays far from them.

Train a child in the way he should go, and even when he is old he will not turn from it.

The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender.

Whoever sows injustice reaps trouble, and the rod of his fury will be destroyed.

The generous will be blessed, for they share their bread with the poor.

Drive out the mocker, and strife goes with him; quarrels and insults come to an end.

Whoever loves a pure heart and speaks with grace will have the king as a friend.

The eyes of the LORD watch over knowledge, but he overturns the words of the treacherous.

The sluggard says, "There is a lion outside! I will be killed in the streets!"

The mouth of an adulteress is a deep pit; the one the LORD is angry with falls into it.

Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far from him.

Whoever oppresses the poor to enrich himself, or gives to the rich, will come to poverty.

Turn your ear and listen to the words of the wise; set your heart on what I teach.

It is pleasant to keep them within you, to have them all ready on your lips.

So that your trust may be in the LORD, I am teaching you today—yes, you.

Have I not written for you thirty sayings of counsel and knowledge,

to teach you true and reliable words, so that you may give a sound answer to those who send you?

Do not rob the poor because they are poor, and do not crush the afflicted in court,

for the LORD will take up their case and will rob of life those who rob them.

Do not make friends with a hot-tempered man, and do not keep company with anyone given to rage,

or you may learn his ways and bring a snare upon your own soul.

Do not be one who strikes hands in pledge or puts up security for debts;

if you have nothing to pay with, why should your very bed be taken from under you?

Do not move the ancient boundary stone set up by your fathers.

Do you see someone skilled in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men.

The expression טוֹב־עַיִן (tov-ayin, "good eye") in verse 9 is a Hebrew idiom for generosity and liberality, contrasting with the "evil eye," which denotes stinginess. This expression also appears in other Semitic cultures and reflects the view that the eyes reveal the attitude of the heart.

The word שָׁלִישִׁים (shalishim) in verse 20 is debated. The Ketiv form שלשום and the Qere form שָׁלִישִׁים may mean "thirty" (proverbs) or "excellent things." Many scholars see this as an introduction to a collection of thirty sayings of wisdom (22:17–24:22), possibly inspired by the Egyptian structure of The Instruction of Amenemope, which also contained thirty chapters.

The practice of striking hands (תֹּקְעֵי־כָף, toq'ei khaf, verse 26) refers to acting as a guarantor or putting up security for another's debt. This was a common but risky financial practice in ancient times, where one could literally lose everything—including their bed (verse 27)—if the borrower failed to pay.

The section from verse 17 onward shows striking similarities with Egyptian wisdom found in The Instruction of Amenemope (c. 1100–1000 B.C.). This shows that Israelite wisdom literature was part of a broader, international wisdom tradition in the ancient Near East, even though the biblical texts give the content a distinctly Yahwistic framework with the Lord as the source of justice and wisdom.
