Whoever stiffens his neck against correction will suddenly be broken beyond healing.
When the righteous grow many, the people rejoice; when the wicked rules, the people groan.
A man who loves wisdom gladdens his father, but a companion of prostitutes squanders his wealth.
By justice a king gives a land stability, but a man who takes bribes tears it down.
A man who flatters his neighbor spreads a net for his feet.
In the transgression of an evil man there is a snare, but the righteous sings and rejoices.
The righteous knows the rights of the poor; the wicked has no such understanding.
Scoffers set a city ablaze, but the wise turn away wrath.
When a wise man goes to court with a fool, the fool only rages and laughs, and there is no peace.
Bloodthirsty men hate the blameless, but the upright seek to save his life.^[Hebrew: "the upright seek his life"; others understand the line as "and they seek the life of the upright."]
A fool lets out all his anger, but the wise holds it back.
If a ruler listens to lies, all his servants become wicked.
The poor man and the oppressor have this in common: the LORD gives light to the eyes of both.
If a king judges the poor with truth, his throne will stand secure forever.
The rod and reproof impart wisdom, but a child left to himself brings shame on his mother.
When the wicked increase, transgression increases, but the righteous will see their downfall.
Discipline your son, and he will give you rest; he will bring delight to your soul.
Where there is no vision, the people run wild, but blessed is the one who keeps the law.
A servant is not corrected by words alone; he understands, but does not respond.
Do you see a man hasty with his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him.
Pamper a servant from his youth, and in the end he will bring you grief.^[The meaning of the Hebrew word rendered "grief" is uncertain; some understand it as "heir."]
An angry man stirs up strife, and a hot-tempered man abounds in transgression.
A man's pride will bring him low, but the lowly in spirit will gain honor.
Whoever shares with a thief hates his own life; he hears the oath but says nothing.
The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe.
Many seek the favor of a ruler, but justice for a man comes from the LORD.
An unjust man is detestable to the righteous, and the upright in his way is detestable to the wicked.
