In the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam son of Nebat, Abijam became king over Judah.
He reigned three years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Maacah daughter of Abishalom.
He walked in all the sins his father had committed before him, and his heart was not wholly devoted to the LORD his God, as the heart of David his forefather had been.
Yet for David's sake the LORD his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem, raising up his son after him and keeping Jerusalem standing—
because David had done what was right in the eyes of the LORD and had not turned aside from anything he commanded him all the days of his life, except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.
There was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam as long as he lived.[^1] [^1]: Rehoboam, Abijam's father, had already died (14:31); the note looks back over his whole reign. A few Hebrew manuscripts read *Abijam* here.
The rest of the acts of Abijam and all he did are written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah. There was war between Abijam and Jeroboam as well.
Abijam rested with his fathers and was buried in the City of David, and Asa his son reigned in his place.
In the twentieth year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Asa became king of Judah.
He reigned forty-one years in Jerusalem. His grandmother's name was Maacah daughter of Abishalom.[^1] [^1]: Hebrew reads *his mother*; the term can denote a grandmother or other female ancestor. Maacah was also the mother of Abijam (v. 2).
Asa did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, as David his forefather had done.
He drove the cult prostitutes out of the land and swept away all the idols his fathers had made.
He even removed his grandmother Maacah from her position as queen mother, because she had made an obscene image of Asherah. Asa cut down her image and burned it in the Kidron Valley.
The high places, however, were not removed; even so, Asa's heart was wholly devoted to the LORD all his life.
He brought into the house of the LORD the gifts he and his father had dedicated—silver, gold, and vessels.
There was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel throughout their days.
Baasha king of Israel marched against Judah and fortified Ramah, to cut off all traffic to and from Asa king of Judah.
So Asa took all the silver and gold left in the treasuries of the house of the LORD, along with the treasuries of the royal palace, and handed it over to his officials. King Asa sent them to Ben-Hadad son of Tabrimmon, son of Hezion, king of Aram, who ruled in Damascus, with this message:
"Let there be a treaty between you and me, as there was between my father and your father. See, I am sending you a gift of silver and gold. Go and break your treaty with Baasha king of Israel, so that he will withdraw from me."
Ben-Hadad listened to King Asa and sent the commanders of his forces against the cities of Israel. He struck down Ijon, Dan, Abel Beth Maacah, and all Kinneroth, along with all the land of Naphtali.
When Baasha heard of it, he stopped fortifying Ramah and withdrew to Tirzah.
Then King Asa summoned all Judah—no one was exempt—and they carried away from Ramah the stones and timber Baasha had been building with. With them King Asa built up Geba of Benjamin and Mizpah.
As for all the rest of the acts of Asa, all his achievements, everything he did, and the cities he built, they are written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah. In his old age, however, he suffered from a disease in his feet.
Asa rested with his fathers and was buried with them in the city of David his forefather, and Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his place.
Nadab son of Jeroboam became king over Israel in the second year of Asa king of Judah, and he reigned over Israel two years.
He did evil in the eyes of the LORD, walking in the way of his father and in the sin he had led Israel to commit.
Baasha son of Ahijah, of the house of Issachar, conspired against him and struck him down at Gibbethon, a Philistine town, while Nadab and all Israel were besieging it.
Baasha killed him in the third year of Asa king of Judah and reigned in his place.
As soon as he was king, he struck down the entire house of Jeroboam. He left Jeroboam no one that breathed, until he had destroyed them all, according to the word the LORD had spoken through his servant Ahijah the Shilonite—
because of the sins Jeroboam had committed and had led Israel to commit, and because he provoked the LORD, the God of Israel, to anger.
The rest of the acts of Nadab and all he did are written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel.
There was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel throughout their days.
In the third year of Asa king of Judah, Baasha son of Ahijah became king over all Israel in Tirzah, and he reigned twenty-four years.
He did evil in the eyes of the LORD, walking in the way of Jeroboam and in the sin he had led Israel to commit.
